Flash Atkins & Charlie Sinclair – That Hit (Part 2)

Following last year’s That Hit which rocked boxes worldwide, Flash and Charlie have teamed up again to cover one of the greatest club records of the 90s, Mood II Swing’s All Night Long.

It has the official stamp of approval with Lem Springsteen saying ‘its a fantastic production and vocal which literally blew me away. The original was such a cheap recording…so it’s a major compliment to hear such a classy new version!’

All Night Long is sublime deep garage with funked up beats, live bass, guitar and strings. Add Charlie’s gorgeous vocals and its one for the Southport Weekender heads, sitting perfectly with the likes of Kon, Kerri Chandler and Master at Work.

Flash’s dub hypnotises with a two note B-line, delayed EFX, sparse production and trippy vocals. Jazzy keys, looped guitars and make it a tracky, heads down shoe shuffler.

Oslo’s De Fantastiske To add their magic to the ingredients and the result is a lush eight minutes of synth chords, arps and 808 drums. It is reminiscent of Nu Groove, Marshall Jefferson and early Paper.

Finally, Norway’s Doc L Junior brings out the soul. Rhodes, synth bass, upfront congas, wonky vocals and its a late night jam that hits the sweet spot.

Third Attempt – This will definitely get playtime. Some really soulful stuff going on here. Love the overall feeling of the EP, last track is my favourite.

Richard Seaborne – Preprandial EP

Paper favourite Richard Seaborne is back and on fire with two killer tracks.

Ken has pumped drums doing the heavy lifting while a minor piano progression works with the simple string line and the funk bass filters to full effect. Make no mistake, this is a stripped back bomb to cause scenes.

Susy takes a different route down to the depths of arpeggiated chug. Back in the day acid bass, attacking distorted stabs, italo pads and filtered samples push it deep in to hypnotic ALFOS territory. A track that will rock boxes from techno to house to disco and back.

From Beyond – New Moon EP

Paper Disco continues to support emerging talent and Alex Wastnidge’s From Beyond is a fine example of a new generation of disco producers. His second EP for Paper Disco is three tracks of stripped back fire that were made with ‘analogue synths, MPC 1000, electric guitar and live bass’.

New Moon has a disco-not-disco B-line that breaks for cover with the 80s synths and guitar for heads down business. Double hand claps brings smiles and its NRG all the way.

Mass Transit slows things down but with the same dubbed out live sound. There are squelches and arps to take it into a cosmic area but with maximum dance floor sensibilities.

Finally, Earthbound is more tripped out with delayed SFX and synths driven along by cowbells and congas. Next stop outer space!

The Wild Army Vol.2

The EP series returns with more outlaws from San Francisco, Mexico, Japan, Portugal and err, Nottingham causing havoc on dance floors worldwide.

Mr Tea is back, this time remixing Praus and he’s turned in a deep house, space disco banger. Tribal drums, analogue B-line and heavy atmospherics result in a 4am melon twister of a track.

Tokyo resident R-04’s ‘Kanbanwa’ is 4.38 of perfectly formed deep disco garage. Heavy beats blend with synth jams to make way for the popping bass played by Mike Watt of Minutemen and The Stooges fame. That’s right, as in Iggy Pop.

For Torn Sail’s Treasure, Tiago follows up his epic Birds remix on Claremont 56 with balearic headlights turned to full beam. A nagging synth bass bounces along as organ, effected vocals and live drums create a mood that’s just lovely.

Finally, Picotropico takes things deep with stripped back house track ‘Oslove’ that uses samples, percussion and drums to take us deep into the jungle. Halfway through, things pick as the pulsing bass starts to drive a perfect blend of early doors / late night house music.

Rachel Johns – Special Edition Stubb 12″

Rachel Johns’ describes how she created the artwork for the record sleeve:

“Listening to the Stubb track I was inspired to draw the images for the record sleeve. My process is to draw with a stick & ink on textured paper to create a final drawing.
The next part was a collaboration with Amy Mellis & The Egg Factory as Amy designed the colourful labels for the records. We then went on to screen print the two images on either side of the card sleeve here at The Egg Factory.
For a very special limited edition of 20 I made screen printed fabric sleeves using the main image & free machine stitched into the background of each one with red thread. I often stitch into the background of my original drawings as I love the unexpected quality of drawing with a sewing machine onto paper- I thought it would make a special edition to actually stitch onto the fabric sleeves!”

Stubb – Love Not Sex feat. Huw Costin & Rachel Foster

Love Not Sex is the second Stubb release from Paper Recordings’ Ben Davis (Flash Atkins) forthcoming on vinyl and digital.

The original is a melancholic slice of sunshine that draws inspiration from MOR and blue-eyed soul with a hefty dose of balearica. Acoustic guitars, Rhodes, live drums and strings plus Crazy P’s Tim Davis on bass provide the perfect cinematic backdrop for the plaintive vocals of Huw Costin (Torn Sail) and Rachel Foster.

Japanese edit hero Mori Ra delivers his first ever remix and its a doozy. Keeping the bones of the original track, he takes it in to dark psychedelic waters with the help of former_airline’s tripped out guitar. A spoken vocal tips it in to full Balearic wonkiness that will have the likes of DJ Harvey and Bjørn Torske getting hot under their disco beards.

Bergen’s Leca employs his trademark stripped back crisp production for a warm, dreamy remix. Steel guitar, clicks, whirrs and a Nordic playfulness make for a cosmic journey to the Northern Lights.

Following their appearance on Trash The Wax 5, we are thrilled to release Minus The Majors’ debut 4 track EP ‘Noise On Repeat’.

The dubby & filtered opener Black & White is stripped back garage with plenty of subby, bouncing bass. Seven and a half minutes of proper house joy.

Peanut Dust is straight up sunshine grooves with bags of swing. Kerri Chandler style stabs across organ chords and an infectious high end pattern plus a breakbeat brings the groove.

Baker Lights starts with breaks then drops to a 4/4 as the twanging digi bass hits your head. Stabs, synths & samples bounce in all directions whilst ripping over the drums.

Ivasha Flew closes off the party and heads deep into the Latin tropics with tribal chants, drums and infectious synth lines. This is a proper late night Balearic beauty and will cause scenes if dropped at the right moment.

Nutritious – Indeed a really, really good EP. Some of the freshest new house around. Nicely done.

Musica de Baile has clean and crisp production, fizzing percussive arps and a krautrock synth that builds in wonderfulness as the track develops. Is it deep house, space disco or balearic? Who cares when its this good!

Nahual gets lush with Mordisco’s sparking production. Heavy on atmospherics, the bass drives things along as synth lines weave in and out and the dynamics build in to a trip for the head and feet.
