The Secret Soul Society – Secret Revenge E.P.

The Professor of all things Balearic, Cal Gibson is back with the perfect summer soundtrack for newfound freedom.

JR’s Revenge sees him hooking up with BLAOS Recording for the finest disco nagger this side of NYC. A recurring string makes it super catchy with delays and keys tripping things out.

Could You Like Me More? squelches and chugs as the repeated title refrain brings in some Laurel Canyon melody. Wonky and groovy in equal measure.

Hope I Made You Happy is aural bliss that brings a smile as the sun goes down. Delayed guitars, broken drums and shimmering EFX set the perfect backdrop to the heartfelt vocal.

Music channels the spirit of Lemonjelly with a jazz vocal, rubber bass, subtle keys and sample.

Finally Lonely Am I has a jazz bass rubbing up alongside atmospheric strings, delayed trippy vocals and some lo-fi acid. It shouldn’t work but it does, fantastically.

Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy: “Loving the first mix already – will be getting this on Balearic Breakfast!”

Moodymanc: “Uploading JR’s revenge for radio rotation, thanks!”

Bob Hill (Illicit Grooves): “A lovely spread of tracks here. I look forward to programming some of these in the IllIcit Grooves show on TWR”

Massey: “Top marks all round again….all winners & high hitters, Lonely Am I maybe just pips it but its an all round fantastic release. Top work!”

Martin Wold – Reisen EP

Another slice of the nu disco deep stuff from Martin Wold who brings some serious Norwegian heat to late nights and sunny days.

Havet has drums that swing, a sweet sample, locked in bottom end and synths that hypnotise. There’s a touch of early Paper about it and it’s brilliantly playable at any time of night.

Seilet hits a similar vibe but with a slightly techier edge. A square bass, stabs, ringing snare, keys and arped shimmering synths create deep music for positive people.

Le Visiteur: “Really nice release, Havet for me!”

Duncan Grey: “Loving both of these…yes definitely a touch of early paper here”

Get Down Edits: “Excellent!”

Billy Scurry: “Lovin the shimmer on Havet, just floats.. The that bottom end swing on Seilet!”

Super FU – Cocoons

Fall to your knees and thanks be to the Balearic Gods, Super FU are here and ready to deliver a blast of much needed sun drenched sounds ahead of their (very brilliant) debut album. ‘Cocoons’ is a taster of what’s coming with two original cuts from the long player plus added remix action.

All I Have Known rolls off the blocks with a distorted piano loop, spaced out arps, lazy beats and lush pads, all topped with ethereal vocals for sunsets and hazy evenings. Good times are coming.

Stay Here packs some wonky style synth hits and offset beats with Sarah Lazenby’s fabulous vocals giving it that extra special something. Added floating pads & synth chords put this firmly in the ‘Balearic Street Soul’ category.

Remixes go fully into orbit as Dan Wainwright and our very own Massey tackle ‘All I Have Known’ and create a full blown space disco workout that sounds like a lost Lindstrøm track. Dancefloor mayhem is predicted.

Balearic godfathers Coyote take ‘Stay Here’ and turn in a dubbed out percussion led cosmic groover with pulsating synth lines and soaring pads ahoy..smoke if you got ’em!

Ron Basejam: “Original and Coyote on All I Have Known are definitely tickling my trumpet!’

Fingerman: “That Wainwright & Massey remix is awesome! Nice one lads!”

Pathaan: “KILLER PACKAGE!!!”

Robot 84: “TBH both remixes are sounding hot, not much between them, love them both.. the originals are great as well!”

Oddio Factory – It’s A Factory

Sounds of a Parisian style are the flavour on this release from the duo known as Oddio Factory. If house music with a touch if the cinematic is your thing, then this one delivers in spades.

The Prophet boasts full on throbbing low-end action alongside some serious John Carpenter style Arp work and pads in the breakdown. Sci-fi house and disco with a stop off at Baldelli’s Cosmic Club is where it’s at.

U Slip is a more stripped back and sparse offering that keeps things cosmic but goes heavy on the hypnotic. Swinging drums, mutant synth stabs, analogue pads and twisted vocal samples take it early doors or late night.

Got Bolts (Keito Sano on the Shore Remix) goes right to the dance floor for a late night, hazy deep disco workout with a one note bass driving the sparkling percussion and synths. It’s a mix that cuts through genres from techno and house to Balearic and soulful.

The original Got Bolts is a heavier affair with broken house beats and a two note bass holding down the psychedelics delays and synths.

Sean Johnston: “Keita mix for the win!”

Dicky Trisco: “Feeling original of Got Blots here. Deadly!”

Anthony Mansfield – Sometimes yah gotta listen twice. GET SOME!

Bill Brewster: “Keito Sano mix is nice!”

Get Down Edits – Excellent stuff from Paper Recordings, ive been playing Paper Records since 96 & still feature stuff in my sets today.

Fingerman – The remix is right up my street :)

Thrillhammer: “That Got Bolts, Keita Sano remix, is really gorgeous!”

ThrillHammer – Heart Throbbing Lover – Part II

Not content with dropping one of our stand out releases of 2020, ThrillHammer return with a top shelf selection of remixes for Heart Throbbing Lover, including a house legend that has been on the Paper’s bucket list since we started in 1994.

That legend is Eric Kupper, who leads the charge with a classic NYC makeover bearing all his trademarks of smooth beats, soulful keys and lush strings. Classic house made for late nights and early mornings. Instrumental version available on request.

Tal M. Klein is back in the Paper fold and he unleashes his signature wonky left-of-centre vibes all over this version. It squelches and grooves like a forgotten 80s video game with the best soundtrack you’ve never heard. Off piste DJs and dancers apply here.

The Shoplifters take the party to a jazz club on their broken disco funk version with plenty of live instrumentation and wonk for forward thinking floors.

Sean Johnston (ALFOS) : “Ah yeah return of Tal M. Klein – fucking killer!”

Martin Moscrop (A Certain Ratio): “I like all the mixes. Eric’s mix is obviously the most uplifting and ready for the first signs of spring. I like the funky bass in the shoplifters mix. The Tal M. Klein chugger is my fav though with the wordy rappinghood style synth riff”

Ransom Note: “that Eric Kupper remix is golden!”

David Dunne: “Top work, the Eric Kupper mix is bang on but also like the Shoplifters mix too!”

Robot 84: “Eric’s remix is hot, Tal M Klein remix is superb!”

Lakeshouse Remixed

Norway’s next big things Lakeshouse have called on friends to give their two EPs the re-rub treatment and what a job they’ve done.

The band themselves have taken Firkanta downtown to deep house with their trademark sparking production, musicality and dynamics. It’s held down with a 4/4 and nagging bass but filled with all kinds of disco wonderfulness from the original that is aimed full square at future thinking dance floors.

Jarle Bråthen takes a break from the Telemark Express project to flex his muscles on NRK. Stuttered drums and driving bass hold the original parts together for a lovely krautrock balearic take on the original.

RSS Disco serve up a massive filtered dirty bass that brings some serious funk. Added acid and the Norwegian vocals make this a deep late night head mangler.

Finally Reggie Got Beats takes Ambulanse by the scruff of the neck and gives it a good old shake. Bumping house with a large helping of disco magic bring the NYC swing for late night good times.

Oliver $: “Liking the 6am Sensual Dub, thanks!”

Bottin: “Firkanta dub is nice. loved the originals too”

Jaegerossa: “mad love for this one going on the Midnight Riot podcast!”

Olle Abstract: “Great EP. Hard to choose one. Will def play out when allowed + on my radio show”

Massey: “Lots of cosmic style wobble & pumping action here! Love the 6AM Sensual Dub. All killers, will support on some of the shows for sure”

Flash Atkins – The In Crowd Remixes

Flash Atkins has got The In Crowd off the back catalogue shelf, dusted it off and passed it on to some of his favourite producers for a re-rub.

Originally released on one of Paper’s sister labels We Are Woodville, The In Crowd takes a Bryan Ferry sample and uses it as the bedrock for a peak time cosmic disco banger. Fully road tested on boat parties in Croatia, the breakdown has been certified as highly flammable.

Man about town and son of Bolton, Chris Massey flexes his late night production muscles. The extended sample rides rock solid beats and squelchy bass as the track locks in for serious dancefloor business.

From Beyond keeps the big room cosmic vibe with added guitar, acid and lots of reverb. It is warehouse disco house at its finest.

The Soundersons keep the original intact but pitches it down and adds some disco swing. It comes off like chopped and screwed, drugged up disco for those moments when things get weird.

Andy Wilson: “I love Roxy Music and this is a great use of the In Crowd sample . Original is my fave but also like the From Beyond mix a lot”

Sean Johnston (ALFOS): “Tasty parcel!”

Duncan Grey: “I’m down with the Massey mix here”

Bill Scurry: “Yep, this is mighty fine shizzle, great og and great vibes all round from remixers. All completely different whilst keeping the og vibe intact. They all got me out my seat”

Pathaan – “Love it ! FROM BEYOND tops it for me today. No doubt tomorrow one of the others will hit the spot.”

Tronik Youth – “Great remixes”.

Kooky & Damoon feat. Joanne Steele – EP3

The dancefloor is ablaze once again to the sounds of Liverpool’s finest, Kooky & Damoon. They return to Paper Disco with a third outing, the snappily titled ‘EP3’ and its another slice of slickly produced disco with a wink to cosmic and a nod to Studio 54.

‘Got To Be Real’ has lovely piano chords, hip shaking bass, Quincy Jones style strings and stunning vocal from Joanne Steele, who delivers it direct to the floor.

Joanne returns on I”m With You’ which goes in deeper, with a big room disco acid bass alongside funky as hell guitars and lush strings. Infectious, catchy and equally at home in a dark basement or main room Ibiza.

Remixes come from a pair of disco hotshots with James Rod tackling Got To Be Real whilst Andy Buchan reworks I’m With You, each taking things heads down to the party. BOOM!

2 Billion Beats – Meanders EP

As Phil Lynott once sang, ‘The Boys Are Back In Town’ and indeed they are, as 2 Billion Beats jump back in the Paper saddle.

Three brand new cuts of analogue electronic brilliance make up the Meanders EP and its a true return to form.

Beats of No Nation puts Fela through the disco machine for a lazy chug number. It has a tribal build that gives way to an acid B-line alongside a distorted vocal and big chord stabs to make this a solid ALFOS box ticker.

Empty Boulevard has plenty of cosmic arp action and synth stabs to lift it into peak E time tackle before lush piano chords mellow things out. And don’t forget the disco strings.

Down The Docks is the dance floor weapon on this package. Heavy bass jumps around with raspy lead lines and clattering percussion to give it a proper low slung flavour…and the drop detonates!

Pete Herbert: “Excellent as usual!”

Daco: “Loving the disco theme running throughout this release. ‘Beats of No Nation’ is the stand-out track with ‘Empty Boulevard’s euphoric vibes coming in a close 2nd. Superb!”

Robot 84: “Great release , all three tracks really strong, Beats Of No Nation is killer love it…”

Pathaan: “Loving all 3 tracks ! Empty Boulevard hits the spot today, no doubt the other will another day”
