A new compilation celebrating the sounds of Andrew Weatherall and Sean Johnston’s A Love From Outer Space (ALFOS) is out now on Material Music.
Marking the 15th anniversary of the legendary club night, known for its close-knit community and transformative dancefloor experiences, the compilation will “highlight tracks that helped define the sound of A Love From Outer Space while also pointing toward its future”.
ALFOS, an influential club night known for its slower tempos and eclectic music, celebrates its 15th anniversary with a compilation album. Founded in 2010 by the late Andrew Weatherall and Sean Johnston, ALFOS carved a unique space in the underground music scene, championing a hypnotic blend of kosmische, house, dub, and post-punk, all kept below 122 bpm. This compilation, curated and mixed by Johnston, reflects the club night’s history and its forward-thinking approach. While acknowledging the past, the album also highlights the future of ALFOS’s sound, featuring exclusive tracks like the sought-after Neville Watson remix of The Blow Monkeys and Brioski’s “Call 626,” alongside other gems that capture the club’s distinctive vibe. The compilation is a testament to ALFOS’s enduring influence and commitment to adventurous, boundary-pushing music.
Compiled and mixed by Johnston, the 19-track album features an assortment of exclusive tracks and remixes, including Paper Recordings, Malaysian house head KIMO with his Whirl track, unearthed from 2015!
Whirl takes a more hypnotic route, nailed down by a cowbell and analogue bass. Gamelan steel drums give it that evocative Eastern flavour, hypnotising you into a delayed break when things get serious. The riff keeps on with leads, pads, and synths for a fresh, dancefloor-heavy track, and dripping in atmosphere.
