Cal Gibson, the one-man music machine who never fails to deliver, is back once again with a bag full of disco and Balearic wobblers. Freaks on the Floor is an off-kilter, cut-up groove with an infectious walking bass. There are plenty of pops and tweaks, along with an acid bass and arrangement that keeps you guessing without losing the drive. The rest of the EP weaves the heady heights of psychedelic beats, bootlegs and wonky swing. He’s done it again!

ABOUT: SECRET SOUL SOCIETY
Hailing from South Wales, Secret Soul Society is the acclaimed Balearic and downtempo project of veteran producer and DJ Cal Gibson.
Since its inception, the project has become a cornerstone of the modern “nu-Balearic” scene, earning a reputation for its lush, sample-heavy soundscapes that bridge the gap between sun-drenched daytime grooves and hazy late-night soul. Before launching Secret Soul Society, Cal Gibson was a key figure in the UK’s electronic scene as one-half of the influential Nottingham duo Neon Heights. Throughout the late ’90s and early 2000s, Neon Heights garnered significant success on labels like Glasgow Underground and Sunday Best, known for their sophisticated blend of deep house and downtempo.
This evolution saw Cal return to his roots at Paper Recordings under the Secret Soul Society moniker, trading high-octane club energy for a more “Balearic-minded” approach. His music is characterised by what Gibson calls “obsessional late-night collaging”—a mix of jazz, funk, Afrobeat, dub, and reggae. This signature sound has found a home on several of the world’s most respected boutique labels like Hell Yeah Recordings, Rare Wiri and Hot Digits. The project has received widespread acclaim within the global Balearic community.
His tracks are staples in the sets of influential selectors like DJ Alfredo, Chris Coco, and Bill Brewster. Critics often describe his work as “intoxicating” and “expressive,” noting his ability to use “weird yet wonderful” vocal samples to evoke nostalgia and warmth.
