DJ REACTIONS BELOW

FRED EVERYTHING
I’m a massive fan of Paper since day one. I have all of those already but these will beat my home made vinyl rips I’m sure. Thanks to one of the best house labels that ever was.

MANUEL TUR
Great release, thanks for this! Paper used to be a favourite of pretty much every house DJ in my hometown of Essen back in the day. While some of my personal Paper favourites didn’t make it there are also some tracks I didn’t know at all!

RIPPERTON
What a great idea to bring out all these incredible pieces. I remember I played a lot of Da Kingue D’mazda, Bust A Bubble and the all the crazy P stuff. It was really an essential label and really based on quality!

DETROIT SWINDLE
This is a must have collection right here.

DJ ROCCA
WOW! What a collection of Wonderfull tracks!! Paper recordings is a MUST….super proud to have released on that label me too

ASHLEY BEEDLE
I think I put some music out on Paper! My memory has gone. A big salute to Ben Davis and an extraordinary label. 25 years more please!

DANNY KRIVIT
Only had a couple of these from back in the day, but love the ones I didn’t know,

BILL BREWSTER
Lots of good stuff here though there are others I would’ve preferred to see too. Hard call to make with that label.

JAMES TIEJ
What a collection! Been a massive fan for years, nice to have a compilation like this! Too many amazing cuts to single out!

Finding this is my inbox after a month of holiday puts a smile on my face :) Paper has been such a big part of my sound for the past 25 years and always brings the right vibe and energy to the floor. Great compilation of this stellar label, which is still going strong, respect!

HIFI SEAN
Paper gems here ….how can you not love this all in a handy package.

KELVIN ANDREWS
Too many killers to pick a favourite (or even two!) A fitting tribute for a Northern Powerhouse of a label. Fantastic release!

BILLY SCURRY
Absolute Aceness! What can be seen by each Album is the breadth of work, and GREAT work at that, put out by Paper. One (Crazy P) is like meeting old friends for a beer.. tracks you’ve known, played, loved over the years… Beautiful!
The other (Flash) is like finishing the beers, making the call, and going out out! Hitting the dancefloors with said friends and ending up in Barbs, on a beach or in a field or a bashment. And this is what Paper did.. Made you feel like you were part of the label/family.. you felt like they were releasing stuff for you and your mates because they knew what you were into, even before you did.
And the fact that it is still doing that now is a huge testament to the never ending search for great new music by the people/family behind the label. (we know who you are), and we thank you! BRAVO! and on to the next 25 yrs!!

STUART PATTERSON (FAITH/ THE DATE / MI SOUL RADIO)

Ah the glory days when Crazy had a penis and I used to get sent 12 inches in brown paper bags. Absolutely essential UK label.

HARRI JAMES HARRIGAN/ SUB CLUB
Lots to like here, got most on vinyl . Must get it all out!

EDDIE C
Ulalalalaaalal so great … mainly have all of this tracks on vinyl but its great to see it on one place. Will play it out already this weekend

FISH GO DEEP

HARVEY SUTHERLAND
What a great compilation and label.

GRAEME PARK (THE HACIENDA)
Quality. Great to have these all in one place and to be reminded of how great some of these tracks are.

CHRIS TODD/ HOT TODDY/ CRAZY P
Nice selection by Flash, reminded me of a few tracks i’d forgotten about, Summer Of Love, The History Of The Future and the insanely good The Reasons Why?

Great interview with @TheAshleyBeedle in Friday’s Paper podcast

Ashley Beedle - he da man

As a young teenager I was exploring the delights of disco, soul and jazz funk while still desperately clinging on to my reggae credentials. Places And Spaces was/is an album that opened up a whole new world of aural delights. When I played this record for the first time on dad’s record player it definitely flipped my lid to say the least! The production was so lush. Sweeping string arrangements, sultry rhythm guitar, warm bass and punchy horn charts combined to make this what I can only call cinematic, hovering between the neo funk of his 1973 album Street Lady and the proto-disco soul of Earth Wind And Fire.

FLASH ATKINS – THE IN CROWD / FLASH’S THEME

Proviant Audio – Hey Lets Do It! by Paper Recordings

Flash Atkins – Flash’s Theme by Flash Atkins

We Are Woodville and Paper Recordings’ very own loser super hero Flash Atkins returns to centre stage with another genre-busting EP on We Are Woodville and two brand new cuts that delve deep into the realms of nu disco.

The In Crowd is a chunky and chugging groove laden number based round a hefty Roxy Music sample. It’s got some heavy synths, a big break and is a perfect peaktime roof raiser!

Flash’s Theme is a laid back and jazz infused disco affair. Ronny Jordan inspired guitar lines jam over a warm bed of live drums, full bass and keys to deliver a simply infectious and timeless record.

BUY IT IN OUR SHOP and at all the download stores.

Jazzanova – Nice 12″, The In Crowd gets my support.

Chris Duckenfield : Flash’s Theme sounds like E-Lustrious remixing D-Train in the Arndale Centre.

Rob Mello – Flash’s Theme sounds great!

Billy Scurry – Blinding release, quite hard to chose a fav butboth killer tracks… Flash is in well funky mode!!

Diskjokke – Like The In Crowd reminds me of some of those old guerilla tracks.

Ashley Beedle – Mr Atkins always brings a smile to my face. Roxy Music get’s carved up and Flash’s Theme is a beauty as well.

James Teej (Rekids) – Great, great music! Atkins is the man!

Faze Action – Very good, I like!

Sebastian Döring – Flash’s Theme…oh yeah!

The Dead Rose Music Company – The In Crowd floats my boat and will defo get dropped

Eric Duncan (Rub ‘n Tug) – Cool!!!!

Jim Baron (Crazy P) – I’m in with The In Crowd. Heavy stuff!

Fred Everything – Flash’s Theme for me.

Tim Love Lee – Lovely stuff.

Magik Johnson – The In Crowd for me, Fatboy Slim meets DFA. Love the sleeve too.

Leftside Wobble – Proper rockin’ buisness!

Trent Grimes (MOS) – Flash is king!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Both dope jams!

Kiko Navarro – Excellent tracks, great for those new people who like what they call nu-disco.

Stuart Knight (Toolroom) – Flash’s theme is the one for me “PROPER”

Joshua Iz – Simply good choons.

Murray Richardson – Liking The In Crowd Flashman!!!

Disco Outcasts – Massive killer track!!

Dave Pezzner – Wow! Very nice. Flash’s theme is fantastic.

Krysko – The In Crowd… monster hook, will do the business for sure.

Craig Smith (6th Borough Project) – Diggin’ on Flash’s Theme

Diesel (X-Press 2) – Liking it. Will play on show.

Crazy Penis – A Nice Hot Edit With – Textura Review

It’s pretty hard to take seriously a recording credited to Crazy Penis but, in fact, the group’s A Nice Hot Edit With … is seriously good. The band’s A Nice Hot Bath With … appeared in 1999, so it’s no great surprise to hear the 2010 re-work sound so deliciously old-school; in short, if you’re a fan of Yore’s deep, neo-classic sound and the idea of a vocal-less Chic likewise strikes your fancy, you’ll likely cotton to A Nice Hot Edit With just as much.

Paper Recordings

PAPD11

The Superhero past his prime, Flash Atkins is back with a timeless release of deep slow burning soul that shows off his chops as a producer and is backed with some heavyweight mixes to boot.  Featuring Crazy P’s Danielle Moore at her sultry best, the original has live bass, drums, guitar, horns and guitar plus Rhodes and electronics all wrapped up in a killer 90BPM 4/4 groove.

Atjazz pitches things up for some classic deep house in his own inimitable style, laying down an afro groove, shuffling percussion, gorgeous pads and keys that taunt and tease before the bass hits.  He then brings out the heart and soul of the song before taking out the bass and stripping it back down to create a hypnotic middle section reminiscent of Global Underground’s The Way.  The bass and keys then re-emerge for the soulful end….ahhhhh.

Ashley Beedle, a man who’s had his sticky paws in some of the best dance music of the past twenty years takes the track in a psychedelic rock direction.  He gives it a heavyweight drum groove and showcases Danielle’s vocals, using plenty of the original parts but adding some heavily effected guitars and percussion to superb effect.

The Reprise strips the original mix of all its beats and let’s Danielle’s vocals soar over the Rhodes; and finally Atjazz and Ashley Beedle’s dubs are included for those allergic to vocals!

Overall a release of incredibly high quality that sees Flash Akins coming of age.
