Skrangle House

Paper’s association with Norway runs deep; from first signings Those Norwegians it has continued to flourish through to today with the label’s Paper Vision making a documentary called “Northern Disco Lights : The Rise & Rise of Norwegian Dance Music” due out in 2016.

So we thought it was time we pulled together some of the catalogue for a compilation.

“Skrangle” means leftfield or wonky and is a sound that the Norwegians have invented and claimed as their own. Rune Lindbaek fits the bill perfectly and his Junta Jaega is psychedelic disco at it’s best. He was also part responsible for Those Norwegians whose Da King Da Mazda was an anthem in Oslo’s seminal Skansen club and sounds as freshly unhinged now as it did back in the day.

Ralph Myerz has been a cornerstone of the scene since the early Tellé Records days and his Acid 4 Eddie is 14 minutes of deep bubbling house that had types like Osunlade, Laurent Garnier, Soul Clap and The Emperor Machine giving it the big one.

The sound has been passed on to a younger generation to producers like The Treatment, Diskobeistet, Rave-enka and Proviant Audio who’s out the box pop shouldn’t work but does in spades. Latest in line has been De Fantasiske To whose take on classic US garage comes with an arctic twist and they are looking like they have the legs to go all the way.

Add in a classic from from Keyboy, a remix from electronic pioneer Prins Thomas and exclusives from Nordic legend Kahuun, Rave-enka and Proviant Audio and you get a compilation that showcases the best of the country’s world influencing, genre-busting dance music.

Richard Seaborne – Times Are Hard

After previous releases on Paper and Paper Disco, the man who asked “Is This Acid?” (as charted by Todd Terje and featured on Tensnake’s All Gone Pete Tong comp) returns with Times Are Hard.

The original is a post neon 80’s style workout that wouldn’t sound out of place if you were driving a white Testarossa down the California freeway at night. A chopped disco loop gives way to a laid back smooth bass line with delay drenched synth stabs before the sultry vocal delivers.

Paper’s head tea boy and pasty lover Chris Massey throws all the above out of the window and drops a solid 4am whopper with the wobbliest & wonkiest off key synth and bass line this side of his home-town Bolton. It’s already had Emperor Machine asking to do an edit so handle this one with care!

Our Norwegian friends De Fantastiske To drop a mix that could be at home in the basement clubs of New York. It’s simple, jacking & slacking with hypnotic synths alongside the original’s vocal. This is heads down house music with a slight look up only to have a blast a poppers.

DJ Rocca – – “Chris Massey remix blowed my mind!”

Mugwump – “The Chris Massey remix is fucking bonkers.”

2 Billion Beats – Sold My Soul

2 Billion Beats are back with an almighty slab of disco licked house music that is cooler than a cucumber straight out the fridge!

Sold My Soul is the first release from their forthcoming album on Paper and sets its stall out right from the word go! Synths stabs that instantly grab you, smooth bass, amazing vocals and also a big old hands aloft piano breakdown that ensures the rafters will be heavily shaken! Plenty more greatness to come from their album in Spring but this should keep you well & truly topped up in the meant time.

On remix duty is Paper’s boy wonder Chris Massey who takes the party subterranean & ups the oomph factor with a full on stomper & dub version. They both demand a full dance floors attention and will guarantee to give the PA system a good going over.

Hold tight suckas!

Ron Basejam: “Chris’s dub is doing the job!”

Daco: “The original mix is fantastic! Good work guys! Chris’s Dub Mix is a winner too!”

DJ Rocca: “Chris’ dub here for me”

Will Tramp: “Big track. Playing the Massey remix at Homoelectric tonight!”

Tronik Youth: “Yes…Massey’s dub mic for me!”

Fingerman: “Original mix floats my boat. Very tasty!”

Duncan Gray/Tici Taci: “Both of Chris’ mixes are great, esp the dub. Thanks! Supporting”

Billy Scurry: “Great original, but Mr Massey moves it into a different arena.. Great vibes!!”

De Fantastiske To – Monokrom EP

Norwegian young guns De Fantastiske To have come up with three brand new basement blasters for their new Monokrom EP.

It kicks off with the title track that is a straight up deep tech houser packing a vocal punch. Snapping percussion, detuned synth stabs, acid squelch and a large bassline are all present and correct as the sultry vocal stylings of their fellow countryman OST make it a certified killer!

Litt Dristig keeps things murky and a little hypnotic with swirly pads & organ chords then some stubby synth shots that ensure this party is kept subterranean. Proper deep house and not a vest in sight!

Sensommer goes jacking whilst keeping an eye firmly on the dance floor. Beats & bass start the party off and keep everything in check until some almost balearic disco pads & synths bring an element of sunrise to the forefront while the arps go twinkly.

Paper’s resident rodent and all round rotter Flash Atkins manages to stay off the juice long enough to turn in a full on, heads down tech edged banger that should be only played in the darkest of Berlin dark rooms.

Neil Diablo – Monokrom is pretty heavy!

Billy Scurry – Great release, looking forward to hearing Sensommer on a beach in the near future, but the Flash rmx steals it for me.

Danielle Moore (Crazy P) – Nice grooves on here with some quality skippy rhythms!

Goldboy – These guys always deliver the goods.

ROBOT 84 – Hard to pick a winner on here, all killer… thanks!!!

Get Down Edits – Cracking release, look forward to playing these.

Pathaan – NICE

Kahuun – Nice deep release for the dancefloors. The original Monokrom with Ost on vocals is a pure killer track. The Flash remix is on a strong second position.

Mental Overdrive – Flash mix for me. More off-centre than originals.

Severino Panzetta (Horse Meat Disco) – YES i like this.

Rave-enka – Rett I Kroppen EP

Noway keep coming up with producers who offer something fresh and exciting in a world where rave by numbers is often the norm. The next one to look out for is De Fantastiske To’s Rave-enka who mixes up techno, house and disco into a unique arctic stew as this EP perfectly demonstrates.

Rett I Kroppen is an epic disco-tech number purpose built from the ground up for maximum dance floor damage. It’s all about the release and build of the horn and string heavy sample for a track that can cross genres and comes off like a Paperclip People for 2016.

Honningen is just perfect house music; using the raw ingredients of a groove that swings and sample it demonstrates why the best ideas are often the simplest. Add in an arp, some filtering, a dash of Detroit plus dynamics and you have something that sounds like a Scandinavian Moodymann track.

Rett I Fletta brings in a 90s Strictly vibe but keeps things stripped back. Garage drums and analogue bass drive it along before cutting to a pure NYC synth stab for a Sound Factory Bar kind of joint.

Finally, the man who can, Richard Seaborne takes Honningen and beefs things up. With added vocal samples there is no way this can miss and he takes it back to a similar place as his Todd Terje and Tensnake rocking Is This Acid? Expect similar results.

Rave-enka is busy in his bunker recording us an album so expect more block rockers in 2016.

Mark Farina – “Dig these”

Justin Robertson – Great release”

Sleazy McQueen – “Too far gone, Norway back”

Harri (Sub CLub) – “Liking a few of these, full support”

Tronik Youth – “Ret I Kroppen for me great stuff”

Fingerman – “Like the main track but Richard’s remix is next level gear!”

Tim “Love” Lee – “Really digging Honningen!”

Get Down Edits – “Strong 4 track EP right here, looking forward to testing all 4.”

Aldrin Zouk – “Richard Seaborne Remix on point! Also diggin’ Rett I Kroppen.”

Ali Herron (OOFT!) – “Digging the Richard Seaborne remix :)”

Billy Scurry – “Ticks all the boxes, in all the right ways!! so much YES!”

Pablo Contraband – “This is fantastic – Reyy I Kroppen for me Rich’s remix is tasty too – flashback to Bizarre Inc!”

Neil Diablo – “WALLOP! Rett I Kroppen is my pick but this is a great EP.”

Murray Richardson – “Brilliant stuff loving this and perfect for Rebel Waltz in London this Saturday…Rett Kroppen is the one”

Keith Dalton (Groovement Soul) – “WOW, love this. Proper dancefloor bangers. Every track has the perfect amount of Disco vibes with that techy or rave edge. Heaven.”

Bad Barbie (Kane FM) – “Seaborne. That is all.”

Death on the Balcony – “Liking Honnigen top stuff!”

Leon Sweet – “I’m a big fan of Ravi’s work and this doesn’t disappoint. Quailty tackle and diggin Mr Seaborne’s cheeky little remix too. Rett I Kroppen is pick of the
bunch for me.”

Marius Sommerfeldt (De Fantastiske To) – “Rett I Kroppen gir deg en varmende pause og passer perfekt Ã¥ ha med i sekken eller vesken, enten man er pÃ¥ tur eller i hverdagen.”
