Crazy Penis – A Nice Hot Edit With – Textura Review

It’s pretty hard to take seriously a recording credited to Crazy Penis but, in fact, the group’s A Nice Hot Edit With … is seriously good. The band’s A Nice Hot Bath With … appeared in 1999, so it’s no great surprise to hear the 2010 re-work sound so deliciously old-school; in short, if you’re a fan of Yore’s deep, neo-classic sound and the idea of a vocal-less Chic likewise strikes your fancy, you’ll likely cotton to A Nice Hot Edit With just as much.

Proviant Audio sign with PAPER

Norway’s upcoming new star Proviant Audio has just signed his new album with classic dance label PAPER Recordings.

They play either DJ-sets or with some of his partners in crime. Often, you might see as many as 12 men on stage. A liveshow that includes horns, percussion, rhodes, bass, drums and more. LIVE they use: laptops, turntables, trumpet, saxophones, trombone, vibraphone, glockenspiel, acoustic percussions, electronic percussions, rhodes, nord stage, synths, bass, drums and more.

PROVIANT AUDIO is Mathias Stubø – We guarantee a fun filled Journey for groove; think the best of Mr Scruff & Zero7 all wrapped up in a Stevie Wonder disco funk parcel and you’d be on the way there.

Mat Playford presents Hermani – OUT NOW

The irrepressible Mat Playford is back with his second release for PAPER.

The Inflection Point EP was written especially for to launch his Ibithan – We Love party this week setting up this summers Space residency.

Mat is one of house music’s emerging talents with his productions hitting the sweet spot for DJs such as Sasha and Paul Woolford. His debut release for us ‘Tuning Issues’ received a five star review in January’s DJ Mag nailing peak time floors from San Paulo to Lisbon to London.

The Inflection Point EP nods to the golden age of house music when Tribal Records reigned supreme and PAPER was but a glint on the Hard Times dancefloor; everything tied together with 00s production and know-how.

Advice in Café Sydney is deep, techy and swinging with a dirty off-kilter bass holding down an analogue riff that works a killer groove.

The Breath has an Erik Kupper sound to it that is deep soulful garage and sounds like a 7am moment on the Med, especially as the synth solo does it’s thing.

Finally Inflection Point is deeeeep and sparse but with balearicy washes tied round a tough and driving bottom end. Phoar!

Daco – Aquarium EP Out Now

DACO: ‘Aquarium’EP
PAPD07

1. Aquarium
2. Feel Your Love feat. Sarah Howard
3. Something for You
4. Play My Mind

Out Now on Beatport : CLICK ME

PAPERecordings has hooked up with Dave Connally aka Daco, one of Manchester’s best-kept secrets for a four track EP of pure class.

Daco has been a cornerstone of dance music in the North since the early 90s through his work with Zed Bias’ Phuturelounge, Jonny Miller’s broken beat label Jus’ Listen and The Unabombers Elektrons project. 2010 will see the launch of his own Magnetic Recordings and debut album. Always in league with the thrill of exploration and the genre ‘good music’, DACO’s pace, depths and decades of influence endlessly journey through jazz, soul and disco, funk, electro and house.

The Aquarium EP mixes up a heady brew of jazz, soul, house, breaks, afro, techno and garage for four amazingly produced timeless tracks. Opening track ‘Aquarium’ is 4/4 roller that slips in to the easy side of jazz with gorgeous filtered strings and vocals with a groove aimed at making hips shake and feet shuffle.

Next up Feel Your Love has broken beats holding down a deep as your feet bass. Subtle washes and Sarah Howard’s’ gorgeous vocals ooze class.

Something For You has been out on vinyl and now gets a digital release. Full orchestral instrumentation, horns, flute, percussion and live drums provide a latin groove that pops and drops, coming off like a big band floor-filler with that all important heavy bottom end.

Finally, Play Your Mind is deep music for the head with Rhodes, broken drums sat back in the mix and plenty of SFX.

Dirty Jesus’ Black Cock

Classic PAPERecordings release Don’t Fuck With My Shit by Dirt Jesus has been picked up by Juno Records. The controversially named Dirty Jesus aka Erik Rug and Marc Collin were one of the many acts to release on the label, and their classic proto nu- disco track Don’t F*ck With My Shit was recorded in one take in the studio, played with real instruments and mixed down live. Between them Gerard Black and DJ Harvey (appearing here as RV Cock) have years racked up making and playing music, their twisted sense of humour and encyclopedic knowledge always on display. With Gerard in the UK and Harvey in the US there was a flurry of long distance phone calls and bouncing back and forth of files, and after their initial collaborative process on the mix they were all set to go off and do the fine tweaking of each one solo. Black Cock rises again – no fluffing required. The RV Cock remix starts with the kind of percussion so indebted to Harvey’s life in Hawaiian paradise that it all but dons a loud shirt and offers you a cocktail. However this is quickly overshadowed by something altogether more menacing, as dark, slow, spacey synths come to the fore. By the time the ethereal vocals and horns come in, Harvey has lulled you into a druggy stupor – before dragging you out of it with one final bass drop that is sure to tear the roof off after-parties from London to Honolulu. Not to be overshadowed, Gerard Black chips in with his own sterling effort, with squelchy acid house bassline and busy drums. Rather than bombarding the listener, Black creates a sonic landscape in which every sound matters. This is sleazy-as-you-like discofied house – exactly what you’d hope for and expect from the legendary Black Cock crew.
The first of Pete Herbert’s two remixes of the gloriously and impeccably titled Don’t Fuck With My Shit features a lazy bass guitar bouncing off twangy keys. By the time the tumbling piano lines come in – and Herbert does make you sweat on it – hands are well and truly up in the air. Part Two, instead of making us wait on the piano, brings it in immediately. It playfully jostles for attention with that addictive guitar hook, and this time Herbert teases us with a bassline that takes nearly two full minutes to kick in. When it does, you have a track that is positively dripping with a sublime piano-driven house sound that is sure to get even the most ardent chin-strokers shaking ass.
