Flash Atkins Juno Review

“Paper Recordings chief Flash Atkins is a friendly sort of chap, and in recent times has spent has evenings locked in the studio with some of the label’s lesser-known names. Here, he delivers the fruit of those labours: a collaborative EP featuring a trio of new cuts. “Wilco”, with 2 Billion Beats, begins as a chunky, low-slung, disco-influenced house number, before morphing into a Moroder-ish chunk of electronic disco madness. CP hook-up “Malawi Chant” (also available in stripped-back Dub form) is a breezy afrobeat affair – all undulating rhythms, darting organs and African chants. Finally, “Calieo Square”, with Havana Candy, is an atmosphere, picturesque slither of melodic nu-disco.”

Flash Atkins – Collaborations # 1

Flash Atkins, hero to some but a waste of taxpayers money to most. But between drinking, smoking, drugging and drinking again he has found time to get in the studio with some fellow producers from the Paper stable.

He goes head to head with young bucks and 80s house merchants 2 Billion Beats in a tribute to legendary guitarist, Wilco Johnson. Starting with a sampled Dr Feelgood bass it builds up with acid tweeks and arps before a digital pad takes it to the drop. It’s then that the NRG takes off in a 70s pub rock / Giorgio Moroder / house hybrid.

Next up Flash enlists Hebden Bridge local hero, DJ and promoter CP (known to his Mum as Chris Price). It kicks off with a group of men singing on their way to work that was recorded by Flash in Malawi (true story). For the track they have enlisted the cream of Yorkshire’s musicians with live keys, trumpet, percussion and bass for a soulful afro house sound. When the pads come in the second half it takes off!

The dub keeps the bones of the track but adds electronics for an arpeggiated deep house mix with enough grunt to satisfy the most heads down floors. It ebbs and flows as synths and reverbs filter in and out and a piano give it a techno hook.

Finally Flash hooks up with Havana Candy (who has recently been seen on Tusk Wax as Causa) for Calieo Square. This is a deeper and dreamier affair that sounds like the Wamdue Kids in their heyday. Shimmering percussion, synth washes, analogue keys and arps weave a deep house soundscape for heads and feet alike.

Nelson Ramalho (The Weekend Warm Up) – Fantastic loving all three tracks! Calieo is floaty, Wilco is bouncy and Malawi Chant is groovy (go for the dub for a more clubby sound). A nice combo and a strong EP.

Bobby Beige – Excellent stuff,really like all three tracks the kind of house music i like,interesting and deep

Andrew Clarke – Great EP but especially liking the afro vibes of Malawi Chant. Lovely stuff!!

Nuno Cacho – Wilco is a genius track! Malawi Is really a fusion between New Orleans, Angola and Phily’s 90 House? Brilliant! Ok on the Dub put a little beat more of Spirituals… Calieo Square, is so refreshing… Reminds me the after hours on boat at the Douro River playing the Paper’s vinyl promos on the 90’s.

2 Billion Beats – Mega City One

2 Billion Beats mix their love of the 80s, house music, disco, handlebar moustaches and side chaining in to a sound that references the past but puts it firmly in the phuture. With recent releases on 3am Records and getting love from DJs like Pete Herbert, Crazy P, Toby Tobias and Psychemagik they are one of the next generation of producers spinning house on it’s head.

For Mega City One they have gone deep and widescreen. With a sparkly riff that a rock solid bass nails down, the track introduces some Rhodes before building to the break. Then comes the acid and it’s a trip for the head and feet as the tracks ebbs and flows with the atmosphere and dance floor dynamics set to 10.

Next up, the King of Norway Ralph Myerz suitably steps up to the plate, being 2 Billion Beats’ favourite ever producer. Keeping it deep but with a lighter mood, he goes for a Balearic disco vibe and hits a bullseye! Vocoders, NRG bass, crisp production and the original riff give it a classic Paper house sound.

Joe Morris goes more nu-disco with analogue bass and acid, sax and stabbing synths that lock things down before the piano chords. When they come in it’s that dance floor moment you go looking for.

Finally Flash Atkins heads in the opposite direction with a mix that’s deep and moody. Over broken beats, it weaves it’s way through a soundscape of arpeggiated synths, live bass, delayed guitars and percussion to the break where it drops to nothing but a messed up gospel vocal. Then the track elements are re-introduced before strings finish things off nicely.

Cowbell Radio – Cracking stuff as always. Very hard to pick a favourite but I’m a sucker for strings and we don’t hear enough of them nowadays, so the Flash remix tips the scales for me!

Jamie L is a mysterious figure of undisclosed origin and history who fits in to the Moodyman / Theo Parrish mold of heavy future disco; which his new production ‘(What We Saw) In The Burg’ nails.

It’s a heavy leftfield groove laid over broken house beats with a filtered bass, samples and leftfield vibe. The Detroit pad creeps up to the break and filters in and out as the track works it’s way through for locked down dance floor business.

Next up, Havana Candy breaks out the analogue and takes things deeper and techier. With a rolling bass and tweaking acid line, it cuts to a Rhodes before filtering down and riding back to the heads down groove.

Cottam steps up for Paper for the first time and demonstrates what all the fuss is about with a very special mix. Clocking in at 9.41 it’s deep, tough soulful house that crosses the 4/4 divide from techno to disco and deep house to soul.

Ron Basejam (Crazy P) – Love the original, everything he does oozes class and this is no different. cottam just shades it though, pitch down wild-pitch shit.
Sleazy McQueen – This is a wicked Moodymann style slice of house music!

Kelvin Andrews – Real nice release, definitely will play.

Dicky Trisco – All the mixes are good. But it is all about the original really. Jamie L has landed. I’m a fan!

Flash Atkins is a Super Hero who is neither super nor a hero. In fact he’s pretty much a waste of space who would sell his own grandmother for a free drink.

However he does still have the ability to manipulate sound and uses it to make high-grade house music for Paper Recordings.

Did You Forget To Shine? is deep nu-disco that first saw the light of day earlier in the year (in edited form) on the label’s warmly received compilation, Paper Cuts # 1.

Featuring the vocals of Sally Garozzo and based around an analogue bass riff, the track weaves hypnotically with pads and synths before stripping things back in the second half. A rhythm guitar is then introduced that builds things back up to the end.

Next up, there’s an instrumental version for those allergic to vocals. Keeping all the original elements but with added synth lines to keep the track bubbling, it again builds to the rhythm guitar and pads at the end.

First off the blocks, Crazy P’s Hot Toddy is welcomed back in to the Paper fold with an ace mix of deep soulful house. A rubber bass pins things down whilst snatches of vocals and Rhodes make way for a tougher synth riff to get it rocking.

Man of mystery Jamie L does his leftfield disco thing and works the groove over a live bass, lazy low-slung beat and live claps. It’s locked in heads down tackle that layers up the riff with a synth that changes it up a gear.

Finally Havana Candy brings his analogue sensibility to the mix with a deep and techy version that uses elements of the original and full vocals but with added pads, giving it a timeless Balearic electronic flavour.
