Leon Sweet – Sunny Bigler

One of Paper Disco’s biggest tunes of this year has been given the all star re-rub treatment and it’s a full house of dancefloor dynamite.

The original has been rocking the boxes of the great and the good since it was out last year on Trash The Wax # 2 and Luke Una Bomber played it last month on 6 the Music MIF special as Manchester’s hot tune of the moment as well as Nemone on Electric Ladyland.

Leftside Wobble delivers an absolute monster that has been doing some serious damage with the few jocks who have fandangled a copy. Bill Brewster dropped it in his closing Wildlife set and Chris Duckenfield has been pressing the launch button. We’re talking a warehouse vibe with an arp riffed bass, plenty of reverb and the filtered, plaintive vocal giving it that emotional depth that all the best house music has. Make no mistake, this is one heavy remix.

Florida’s King of Disco Sleazy McQueen introduces a rolling bass, congas and some cheeky attitude for a stripped back joint that will smoke the floor. Add the vocal with subtle hypnotics from the original and it’s a late night, low ceiling, dry ice moment.

OOFT!:

Rave-enka – Påfuglen EP

After providing hefty remix action for Richard Seaborne and behind the massive Gimme Some Dim Sum as one half of De Fantastiske To, Ravi Brunsvik steps up to drop his debut solo EP of the Norwegian good stuff on Paper.

Antibac kicks things off and to quote Chris in the office “it builds like an absolute bastard!”. Nearly 10 minutes of solid thunder is accompanied by jacking percussion and icy synth stabs whilst the beat just keeps on trucking. This one will grab you before you realise what’s happened.

Sur Sennep takes things to a late night discotheque located somewhere between The Hacienda and a Croatian festival. An almost acid house set up leads the way before evolving into the kind of balearic disco that can only be dreamed up in Norway. There are plenty of hooky synths, old skool keys and a bassline that squelches. Good times ahead when you unleash this..

Closing the EP off Påfuglen picks up the baton and takes things to the chill out room. Minimalistic and stripped back yet still full of enough synth squeaks, tweaks & bleeps to keep you hooked and intrigued. If Kraftwerk opened an opium den then this would surely be on their in-house playlist.

Sean Johnston – Chris Massey sent me this ages ago – I didn’t label it properly and I have been dying to know what it was – mystery solved. It’s fucking brilliant and has been a staple of 2015 ALFOS parties. KILLER!

Leon Sweet – Situation Stable EP

South coast resident Leon is back from rocking Croatia with two super good tracks that reflect both sides of the dance music coin.

“Above” is a fine slice of nu-disco to kick things off. It’s a kick heavy cut up with P funk bass, Chic guitar, live drums, sampled vocals and a healthy dose of leftfield wonk that has already proved itself at this year’s Electric Elephant.

On the flip “Below” takes things synthy, dark and hypnotic with congas to give it that all important funk element. It builds with 5th stabs, a healthy bottom end and enough melody to keep things interesting but it’s a 4am moment all the way.

Paper Cuts # 2 Hits the Digital Shelves

Paper Recordings hits its 20th birthday in 2014 and most labels would sensibly sit down in an armchair, light their pipe and release a retrospective. But not us, oh no! Our very first release The Book by Salt City Orchestra had “Look Forward, Not Back” inscribed on the vinyl so this has been the year we launched Paper Disco and why Papercuts # 2 is packed choc-a-bloc with a new generation of artists.

The compilation is the best of Paper’s recent output with a mixture of the familiar, the grizzled and the brand new, demonstrating why Paper is still one of the most exciting house labels in the world today.

There are four exclusive unreleased cuts; recent Norwegian Grammy award winner Ralph Myerz gives us a taste of what to expect from his forthcoming album, Richard Seaborne shows why he is one to watch with ‘Let’s Get High’ running the gauntlet of Detroit and Chicago, Pete Gooding’s mix of Justin Harris’ (Freaks) 1,2,3 Breathe is four to the floor heads down tackle and the unstoppable Psychemagik get their instrumental mix of Research’s Day By Day heard for the first time.

The rest is an embarrassment of riches that takes in Cottam’s 10 minute hypnotic soulful techno mix of Jamie L’s In The Burg, Crazy P’s Hot Toddy and Ron Basejam returning to the label to deliver their deep disco, Flash Atkins’ summer 2013 soundtracking Malawi Chant and the call to weirdness of Freak Club, Daco’s flawless soulful house, acid house war horses Terry Farley and Stretch’s dark garage, Leon Sweet’s breezy sample track GTTR, the disco put down of The Reason’s Why, 2 Billion Beat’s MASSIVE Noise In Your Eye and Ryan Kick turning in an amazing drawn out slomo mix on of Just Past Midnight on Sleazy McQueen’s Space Coast project.

Justin Harris feat. Laura Vane – 1,2 3 Breathe
1. Original
2. House Mix
3. House Dub
4. Down Tempo Mix

Justin Harris, an acid house warrior since 1987 finally arrives on Paper with his debut release 1,2,3 Breathe. His CV boasts gigs at clubs like Panorama Bar, Fabric, The End, Back To Basics and Robert Johnson and remixes for The Human League, Tiefshwartz and Mathew Herbert on labels like Classic, SWAG, Crosstown Rebels and 20 20 Vision. Amongst his many collaborations, Freaks with Luke Solomon is best know for their leftfield take on house and groundbreaking label MFF.

Breathe 1,2,3 is deep house with a soul that has a stamp of quality running through it like a stick of Blackpool rock. Minimal drums, analogue bass, piano and synth strings set things up for Laura Vane’s heart felt and timeless vocals.

The house mix ups drive and tempo but retains the deepness. Along with additional classic house stabs, the piano and strings give the track some nice chord progressions as the vocals tell their story.

The dub strips things back even more with the vocal stabbing and out as the music unfolds.

Finally, the down tempo mix breaks things right down for a lush version that aims at the hairs on your back of you neck and hits.

Sean Johnston (A Love From Outer Space) – Very good indeed!

Sleazy McQueen -I ‘m feeling the midtempo vibes, for sure!

Juno Review for Justin Harris

Bustin' Justin Harris on Paper

“Freaks man Justin Harris has been pretty quiet of late, having not released any solo material for some time. “1,2,3 Breathe”, then, is something of a rare treat for those who grew up with his particular brand of wonky, eccentric deep house. The track itself isn’t as quirky as some of his offerings – think of it as a stylish, off beat vocal deep house cut with left-field leanings – but it is a cut above the norm. The stand-out mix is the oddball House Dub – all shuffling percussion, booming low end and breathy vocalizing – but the two slower alternate takes – the house-boogie styling of the Mid-tempo Mix and the dreamy Down-tempo Mix – are also very good.”
