Joe Morris – Tropical Highway EP

Joe has been releasing music on some of the best UK labels of the moment including EDSC and Is It Balearic? and now the man from Clandestino is back with the follow up to his last EP just in time for summer. Tropical Highway follows the same format with one deep house houser and two gorgeous balearic nodders.

“Always” leads the pack and is aimed at that 3am moment when you’re parked in front of the speaker and living for the moment. Crisp reverbed percussion and a shuffling sub lay the foundations for keys that look towards Detroit. An old school sample helps build the track with strings and pads until the drop is reached and not a moment too soon, that kind of intensity can only be kept up for so long! Then it’s back down to the business of getting stuck in.

“Elysium” has a side chained chorused pad, gentle percussive keys, strings, a trippy vocal sample and the only thing missing is the sound of the lapping sea. It weaves it’s hypnotic magic as the synths and pads play counter melodies off each other sounding like a lost 90s Cafe Del Mar classic which is no bad thing in our book!

“Fireflies” carries on the same tip with filtered pads that are heavy on atmosphere as the bass moves around them. A stabby synth pushes the track along as the drums build and drop with the keys giving it that balearic hook.

So when you’re watching the sun go down and enjoying the perfect Ibiza / Croatia / Thailand / Yorkshire (delete where appropriate) moment , the Tropical Highway EP will be the soundtrack!

Flash Atkins – Collaborations # 1

Flash Atkins, hero to some but a waste of taxpayers money to most. But between drinking, smoking, drugging and drinking again he has found time to get in the studio with some fellow producers from the Paper stable.

He goes head to head with young bucks and 80s house merchants 2 Billion Beats in a tribute to legendary guitarist, Wilco Johnson. Starting with a sampled Dr Feelgood bass it builds up with acid tweeks and arps before a digital pad takes it to the drop. It’s then that the NRG takes off in a 70s pub rock / Giorgio Moroder / house hybrid.

Next up Flash enlists Hebden Bridge local hero, DJ and promoter CP (known to his Mum as Chris Price). It kicks off with a group of men singing on their way to work that was recorded by Flash in Malawi (true story). For the track they have enlisted the cream of Yorkshire’s musicians with live keys, trumpet, percussion and bass for a soulful afro house sound. When the pads come in the second half it takes off!

The dub keeps the bones of the track but adds electronics for an arpeggiated deep house mix with enough grunt to satisfy the most heads down floors. It ebbs and flows as synths and reverbs filter in and out and a piano give it a techno hook.

Finally Flash hooks up with Havana Candy (who has recently been seen on Tusk Wax as Causa) for Calieo Square. This is a deeper and dreamier affair that sounds like the Wamdue Kids in their heyday. Shimmering percussion, synth washes, analogue keys and arps weave a deep house soundscape for heads and feet alike.

Rune Lindbaek – Looooving this Malawi, my favourite tune of the moment!

Tensnake – Quality jams , perfect for summer disco parties!

Richard Seaborne – The Reasons Why

PAPD47

Richard Seaborne – The Reasons Why

1. Original
2. Flash Atkins Mix
3. Sleazy McQueen Mix
4. Leon Sweet’s Negative Positive Dub Mix
5. Instrumental

Richard Seaborne has been described as “ginger and hard partying”. Quite what this means to the music he makes we don’t know but it could be important at some point. The Reasons Why is his debut for Paper Recordings and has been catching the attention on Soundcloud of the likes of Bill Brewster, Cosmic Boogie and Faith’s Dave Jarvis.

The original is a low-slung slice of garage disco that could have come out of NYC in the mid-90s. It’s got nagging percussion, a super heavy kick, driving hats and wobbling sub all wrapped round a chunky sample. The deadpan vocals are a take-down of a former lover and there’s something of the drag queen scene in it’s pithy bitchiness and attitude.

Flash Atkins takes it deep and dancefloor for a heads down main room shoe shuffler. It’s tribal and hypnotic with analogue synths washing in and out while the shifting bass takes centre stage as the vocals tell their story.

Next up Sleazy McQueen brings out The Reasons Why’s disco heart with a mix that sounds like a mirror ball on a Saturday night. With a popping Orange Juice bass circa Rip It Up, synth toms, that sample and classic house piano it’s modern disco at it’s best

Another new signing Leon Sweet brings his own pitched-down bottom heavy chugging sensibility to the table. He nags the vocal in before the tech bass sets off and the track builds with congas and acid line in to a reverbed big floor head-masher

Finally, the instrumental finished things off for those allergic to vocals.

Neil Diablo – Let’s Get It On EP

Neil Diablo, one of Manchester’s unsung heroes steps out from behind the decks to release an EP of future music that ranges from peak time deep house to slo-mo disco.

PAPDL42

Neil Diablo – Let’s Get It On EP

1. Let’s Get It On.
2. Yr Mnd Yr (Dub)
3. Take Two

Neil Diablo has been a cornerstone of the Northwest’s club scene over the past ten years through his El Diablo’s Social Club, which has been a bastion for all things disco and house. Booking guests like Greg Wilson and Eric Duncan, it is well known that Neil is the DJ that the crowds go to hear. Out of the night has sprung EDSC Recordings and his vinyl only disco edits as Evil K’Neil on KAT Records that are highly sought after, selling out in days.

Let’s Get It On is deep tribal business headed straight to the main room. It’s teeth are shown once the organ synth comes in for proper heads down foot to the floor deep house that bites. The latter half of the track gives the 303 a run out and it’s all boxes ticked!

Yr Mnd Yr first saw the light of day on the Paper Cuts # 1 compilation earlier in the year, finding favour with DJs like Justin Robertson, Andy Ash and Love From Outer Space’s Sean Johnston. Here he strips things back for a dub that is tough house music, drawing equal inspiration from Detroit, NYC and Chicago.

Finally he flexes his disco muscles on Take Two. Taking things right down, it’s a rolling funk groove with an off-kilter bass, delayed synths, dub stabs and a sample that does it’s thing in slo-mo style. Music for the head and feet.
