Trash The Wax Vol. 1

Paper’s output has often lurked on the fringes of disco and now seemed as good a time as any to jump in with both feet, goggles and snorkel.

“Trash The Wax Vol. 1” hits the digital racks on April 3 featuring 16 original low slung, wigged out and floor heavy cuts from the great, the good, the tapped and the untapped.

Released on Paper Disco (a sub label of Paper Recordings) it follows hot on the heels of the 80s sugar rush that was Proviant Audio’s “Drift Days & Disco Nights” which found its way in to the boxes of Tensnake, Soul Clap, Horsemeat Disco and Danny Krivit as well as garnering a Norwegian Emmy nomination for the best album of 2013.

Artists on Volume 1 range from young 80s bucks like 2 Billion Beats who are pretenders to Crazy P’s crown, Manchester’s City Life DJ of the 2013 and Wet Play resident Ste Spandex, Paper’s ginger underground house assassin Richard Seaborne and Italian duo Gran Turismo.

More seasoned support comes from veterans like bootleg king Keep Schtum, Brighton’s builder of heavy grooves Fingerman, Australia’s disco vigilante Late Nite Tuff Guy and Manchester’s best kept secret Daco. And that’s just the ones we mentioned!

Running from sleazy late night jams to 80s synth and NRG to classic cut-ups, if this album didn’t make you want to go out and jump off a podium it’s time to get your hearing checked!

Joe Morris – Horizons EP

1. Over My Head
2. Zazous
3. Sky Drops

Joe Morris has been earning his stripes as a DJ for over 20 years and more recently as a producer with releases on 3am, Nang, EDSRC and Baker Street. He is also promoter of the Leeds based Clandestino parties that burn a hole in the Northern underground. Joe can be found party starting behind the decks at places like the Electric Elephant and all over the UK and Europe.

Over My Head kicks things off and is main room deep house with plenty of soul. Wrapped around an analogue bass riff and synth stabs, it’s techy drums keep building to a vocal sample that gives it that all-important feeling. The track twists and turns with builds and drops for aces high dancefloor dynamics.

Next up, Zazous takes up Joe’s trademark Balearic signature sound with warm pads, drums and a touch of old school. Synth strings, washes, arps and stabs let the track ebb and flow like the Med lapping at your feet with a sundowner in your hand!

Sky Drops slows things down a notch but keeps it Balearic. Again taking it’s influence from the golden era of house, it’s the sound of Ibiza in the 90s when optimism and smiling faces were all that counted. Lush chords, strings and pianos immerse you in a world where all is good and pulsing to a house beat.

Laurent Garnier – Emoional deep moody tracks, great EP! Will play for sure!

Farley Silvester – Jam Down Beat Down

Acid House survivors Terry Farley and Stretch Silvester for their first release on the label “Jam Down Beat Down”.

Terry has helped define modern UK dance music. In the 80s through his involvement with Boys Own and bands like the Happy Mondays. In the 90s pioneering a tougher garage sound on JBO with Pete Heller. And in the 00s with Faith, a shining beacon for proper house music.
Stretch Silvester has remixed acts like Pulp & St. Etienne, featured on Coca Cola ad campaigns, composed the music for Bjorn Borg’s London fashion show and continues to run his Bring Back The Future record label.

Together they are Farley Silvester!

Jam Down Beat Down has got the trademark Farley sound of floor heavy main room beats, rolling bass, congas and garage stabs. It’s built around a reggae sample that gives the track an otherworldly feel as it floats in and out with dubbed out effects. There’s a build to the drop before things really take off in the second half!

“Paper is a great fit for us because they understand the draw of the blue lights coming off Ms Vasquez glitter ball as the queens stamp and the ball kids runway. They understand the ultimate HOUSE end game which we have both always aimed for …one day…one day.” – Terry Farley

Jimpster – Massive! liking both mixes here but I reckon the dub will be my pick for playing out.

Doc Martin – Both Mixes are DOPE!!!

Rocky (X-Press 2) – Tel’s on fire right now. Love the dub.

Q-Burns Abstract Message – The first half of the dub sounds exactly like a late-90’s San Francisco record … could’ve been a track off Grayhound. Making me a bit nostalgic, here! Terrific all around.

Marius Våreid (Full Pupp) – Lord Have Mercy! What a cool track! And the Dub is ace too.

Severino Panzetta – Proper HOUSE!!!

Sleazy McQueen – This is really cool!

Jacob (E.A.R) – Great House music how it should be.

Tom Findlay (Groove Armada) – Massive, favourite release on Paper in a long time.
Nelson Ramalho – Cool! Loving the bass line and the vocal is good sounds like a bit of an afterthought to the track but sounds cool. Good job. Dub is good too.

Eric Duncan – Niiiiice!

Harri (Sub Club) – Both good for me.

Aldrin Zoiuk – One for the more discerning & matured floors.

Marius Våreid – Lord Have Mercy! What a cool track! And the Dub is ace too.

Pulse Radio – Bouncy! Loving this!

Severino Panzetta – Proper HOUSE!!!

Benoit C – Cooooool.

diskJokke – Love the feel of the dub.

Pete Herbert – Great main room tackle!!! me digging.

Nutritious – Wow. Serious. Grindin!!!

Murray Richardson – Top stuff loving this – nice driving percussive track, proper heavy bass and love the vocal bitz, perfect for Brazil.

Hannah Holland – Brilliant .. take me to the clurb! WERK

Mighty Mouse – Really like them both, deep n dirty – great stuff.

Psychemagik – Chunky!

Leftside Wobble – Another real H.O.U.S.E. winner from Farley & Stretch Silvester.

Stuart Patterson – Farley gave me this a while back , maybe it wasn’t mastered or finsihed .. thought it was decent but sounds great this morning on my headphones.. will play tonight ..

Research Q & A

How did Research start and when?
Research started way back in 1981. The band originally came together to record an album which was released on the Berlin based label View Records and was titled ‘Laws of Motion’.
Then started playing live shows with an expanded line-up, most notably playing at Heaven in London supporting Bill Laswell and Material.

Is there a concept behind it?
The concept was to create a band with a funk base which could have different soundscapes going on over the top and not committed to one way of thinking.

Who are your major influences?
My influences are many and varied. From prog rock to electrofunk to noise to the New York downtown scene, jazz, blues, soul, house, early hip-hop, drum n’ bass, dub and of course disco (not disco).

It’s been going a long time so has it changed as the music scene has evolved.
The music has changed over the years starting out as more of an improvised jazz-funk outfit (Laws of Motion) to a slightly crazy version of electrofunk / punkfunk (Social Systems) then moving into dub / ambient / jazz / noise territory (The Perpetual City) to the current Disco (Not Disco) phase (Day by Day).

Who are the people involved now?
The current line-up comprises Tim Crowther on guitar, Julian Chown on keyboards, ex-Groove Armada vocalist Valerie Maxfield and myself on drums, programming, samples.

How do you write and produce?
Most of the time the music sort of develops organically starting with the drums. It tends to be more of a group situation with live playing so we would normally use a big enough studio to accomodate that and it’s always nice to be able to go through a big mixing desk. I love to use a mixing desk as another instrument.

What are your plans for the future?
For the future, It would be nice to get a new album done and a return to playing live as well as some dj work.

Do want to remix the next Daco release?!

I would love to remix the next Daco release as it is a totally brilliant track with some amazing vocals.

Research – Day By Day 12″ Vinyl

Paper Recordings are back to the wax with a heavyweight release, Day By Day by Research complete with a Psychemagik remix.

Research were a post punk, industrial jazz funk band who formed in the early 80s supporting bands such as Material and Pigbag as well as playing sessions for the BBC and Womad. They have released three still sought after albums Laws of Motion, Social Systems and The Perpetual City.

Recent interest in the band resulted in releases on Rong / DFA and Bearfunk. Their 2010 Reworks twelve-inch was awarded single of the week on Boomkat.

The Day By Day Dub is stripped back disco not disco that fuses live percussion, bass, guitars, drums, pads and vocals by Valerie Maxfield (Groove Armada / Freestylers) but with studio touches locking it down to a fierce groove. The tension builds until the Rhodes chords drop to give it some deep soul disco.

Psychemagik continue their purple patch with a floor heavy mix that mixes up disco and deep house but is all class. They retain the original elements but add stabs, pads and bass and completely re-arrange it for dance floor impact. Best buckle up for this one.

FLASH ATKINS SUMMER MIX

New mix from Flash of deep house and disco with plenty of unreleased paper tackle.

FLASH ATKINS MIX – MARCH ’12

Here’s a fresh Flash Atkins mix featuring unreleased music from Paper in the form of Psychemagik’s mix of Research’s Day By Day and Neil Diablo’s Yr Mnd Yr.
