Paper Cuts # 2 Hits the Digital Shelves

Paper Recordings hits its 20th birthday in 2014 and most labels would sensibly sit down in an armchair, light their pipe and release a retrospective. But not us, oh no! Our very first release The Book by Salt City Orchestra had “Look Forward, Not Back” inscribed on the vinyl so this has been the year we launched Paper Disco and why Papercuts # 2 is packed choc-a-bloc with a new generation of artists.

The compilation is the best of Paper’s recent output with a mixture of the familiar, the grizzled and the brand new, demonstrating why Paper is still one of the most exciting house labels in the world today.

There are four exclusive unreleased cuts; recent Norwegian Grammy award winner Ralph Myerz gives us a taste of what to expect from his forthcoming album, Richard Seaborne shows why he is one to watch with ‘Let’s Get High’ running the gauntlet of Detroit and Chicago, Pete Gooding’s mix of Justin Harris’ (Freaks) 1,2,3 Breathe is four to the floor heads down tackle and the unstoppable Psychemagik get their instrumental mix of Research’s Day By Day heard for the first time.

The rest is an embarrassment of riches that takes in Cottam’s 10 minute hypnotic soulful techno mix of Jamie L’s In The Burg, Crazy P’s Hot Toddy and Ron Basejam returning to the label to deliver their deep disco, Flash Atkins’ summer 2013 soundtracking Malawi Chant and the call to weirdness of Freak Club, Daco’s flawless soulful house, acid house war horses Terry Farley and Stretch’s dark garage, Leon Sweet’s breezy sample track GTTR, the disco put down of The Reason’s Why, 2 Billion Beat’s MASSIVE Noise In Your Eye and Ryan Kick turning in an amazing drawn out slomo mix on of Just Past Midnight on Sleazy McQueen’s Space Coast project.

Farley Silvester – After Hours

Farley Silvester

After Hours

1. Original Mix
2. Early Mix
3. Late Mix

Two bona-fide heavyweights of the dance scene return to Paper with their second release after last year’s Jam Down Beat Down. Terry Farley helped write the book on acid house and continues to fly the flag for all things quality through Faith and the Boys Own parties. Stretch Silvester is involved with music for fashion and ads as well as concentrating on his “Bring Back The Future” boogie record label.

After Hours is dubbed out peak-time house music that arrives with a thump. The original takes the nagging “after hours “ vocal and sets it over a bouncing sub. Rattling drums keep it driving along along with tripped out keys.

The early mix strips things back with a more wild-pitch bent. Reverbs are used to bring out the drops and that sub keeps bouncing along.

Finally the late mix replaces the bass with a more analogue line and brings in some extra synths. It’s a fine package of quality house music that Stretch and Terry Farley have built their reputation on.

Farley Silvester – Jam Down Beat Down

Acid House survivors Terry Farley and Stretch Silvester for their first release on the label “Jam Down Beat Down”.

Terry has helped define modern UK dance music. In the 80s through his involvement with Boys Own and bands like the Happy Mondays. In the 90s pioneering a tougher garage sound on JBO with Pete Heller. And in the 00s with Faith, a shining beacon for proper house music.
Stretch Silvester has remixed acts like Pulp & St. Etienne, featured on Coca Cola ad campaigns, composed the music for Bjorn Borg’s London fashion show and continues to run his Bring Back The Future record label.

Together they are Farley Silvester!

Jam Down Beat Down has got the trademark Farley sound of floor heavy main room beats, rolling bass, congas and garage stabs. It’s built around a reggae sample that gives the track an otherworldly feel as it floats in and out with dubbed out effects. There’s a build to the drop before things really take off in the second half!

“Paper is a great fit for us because they understand the draw of the blue lights coming off Ms Vasquez glitter ball as the queens stamp and the ball kids runway. They understand the ultimate HOUSE end game which we have both always aimed for …one day…one day.” – Terry Farley

Jimpster – Massive! liking both mixes here but I reckon the dub will be my pick for playing out.

Doc Martin – Both Mixes are DOPE!!!

Rocky (X-Press 2) – Tel’s on fire right now. Love the dub.

Q-Burns Abstract Message – The first half of the dub sounds exactly like a late-90’s San Francisco record … could’ve been a track off Grayhound. Making me a bit nostalgic, here! Terrific all around.

Marius Våreid (Full Pupp) – Lord Have Mercy! What a cool track! And the Dub is ace too.

Severino Panzetta – Proper HOUSE!!!

Sleazy McQueen – This is really cool!

Jacob (E.A.R) – Great House music how it should be.

Tom Findlay (Groove Armada) – Massive, favourite release on Paper in a long time.
Nelson Ramalho – Cool! Loving the bass line and the vocal is good sounds like a bit of an afterthought to the track but sounds cool. Good job. Dub is good too.

Eric Duncan – Niiiiice!

Harri (Sub Club) – Both good for me.

Aldrin Zoiuk – One for the more discerning & matured floors.

Marius Våreid – Lord Have Mercy! What a cool track! And the Dub is ace too.

Pulse Radio – Bouncy! Loving this!

Benoit C – Cooooool.

diskJokke – Love the feel of the dub.

Leftside Wobble – Another real H.O.U.S.E. winner from Farley & Stretch Silvester.

Stuart Patterson – Farley gave me this a while back , maybe it wasn’t mastered or finsihed .. thought it was decent but sounds great this morning on my headphones.. will play tonight ..

Paper Radio 4 – Autumn ’12

Here’s the Autumnal edition of the Paper Radio show presented Ben Davis.

There’s new music on the label from Terry Farley’s new project Farley Silvester, Jamie L, Flash Atkins, 2 Billion Beats as well as old nuggets and other tracks new and old doing it for Paper.

Plus and interview with Bonar Bradberry and a feature on the Vinyl vs. Digital debate with opinions from Piccadilly Records’ Phillippa Jarman, Juno’s James Vorres, Juniper’s Dan Mumberson and Kelvin Andrews.

PAUL RUTHERFORD FAITH INTERVIEW

Friend of Paper, the ever effusive Paul Rutherford has just done a cracking interview with Faith.

Not only was Paul in Frankie Goes To Hollywood, a band who managed to marry club, pop and rock in to a heady sound that resulted in one of the biggest selling singles of all time with “Relax” but he was also at the centre of club culture as it took off in the 80s. Taking in places like the Paradise Factory, Shoom and Queer Nation he lived the nightlife which was reflected in his solo music, like the acid house classic “Get Real”. Paul is a bon viveur and the interview is frank, revealing and a great insight in to pop and club culture.

For the record, Paul is responsible for Paper’s worst ever gig that was in Queenstown, NZ. A meal and quiet drink turned in to a booze-a-thon that meant by showtime, Paper was struggling to stand up. Oops.
