Best of Paper 2020 – Flash Atkins Mix

While 2020 has been a massive shit sandwich with no ketchup, its been a great for music and let’s not forget that the orange lunatic got told to pack his toys and move on….see ya.
Its been a vintage year for us too us too as Paper Wave got in to its stride with brilliant albums from Popsneon, Stubb and The Secret Soul Society along with a flurry of downtempo beauties. Paper Recordings signed their first African artist in Camblom Subaria and the US represented with Mr. Tea, ThrillHammer and Ryan Kick. Paper Disco knocked it out the park with Anoraak, James Rod and Trash The Wax Vol. 8 while Denmark and New Zealand went head to head with Kennedy and Jahn Solo.
Flash Atkins dusted off his controller and blended it all for this end of year mix to see in to 2021 where we’re headed for the light. And just wait to see what we’ve got lined up for 2021….ooooooooooooooft!
Onwards.

Ben ‘Flash Atkins’ Davis and Tom ‘2 Billion Beats’ Lonsborough have teamed up for a project that goes deep down to the depths of tripped out house music.

The Day has a rolling acid sub bass and haunting vocal sample that brings the soul. Horns spar with percussion, bongoes, synths and Rhodes as the broken beats thump on the one.

Big Chief keeps the vibe techy and slo-mo as a 303 riff tweeks over the sub. A vocal chant and synth drive things along as the beat gets baggier and the build is on. Big Chief of the title brings his Mardi Gras chant to the break, then the Happy Mondays are channeled by way of Fabric as strings bring all the elements back together.

Moon of Endor is based around a chunky film sample, which the nerds among us should be able to work out from the title. Its a return of slo-mo tribal acid business by way of the jungle with synth chords saving it from the dark side and its a skywalk to the stars.

Drop the Pressure by Flash Atkins & 2 Billion Beats

Two of Paper’s favourites have collaborated to update Mylo’s classic Drop The Pressure in to a nu-disco banger that’s set to take over the summer. What started as an edit quickly turned in to a full blooded re-make before they hauled in Crazy P’s Danielle Moore for vocals under her Ladydriver guise.

The original brings a band to the party with rhythm guitar, strings, live bass and horn section. The intro teases before the riff that everybody knows and then wallop, we’re off. For the break, Danni brings the disco and hands in the air doesn’t even touch it.

Norwegian next big things Lakeshouse knock it out the park with their 4/4 nu-disco version. It weaves the dynamics and melody around a vocoder and NRG that locks in to deliver a classy, dancefloor remix.

Marma Boog goes deep and cosmic for a pitched down balearic take. 80s synths and drums top off burbling and tripped out vocals. Sunsets never sounded so good.

Flash Atkins & Charlie Sinclair – That Hit (Part 2)

Following last year’s That Hit which rocked boxes worldwide, Flash and Charlie have teamed up again to cover one of the greatest club records of the 90s, Mood II Swing’s All Night Long.

It has the official stamp of approval with Lem Springsteen saying ‘its a fantastic production and vocal which literally blew me away. The original was such a cheap recording…so it’s a major compliment to hear such a classy new version!’

All Night Long is sublime deep garage with funked up beats, live bass, guitar and strings. Add Charlie’s gorgeous vocals and its one for the Southport Weekender heads, sitting perfectly with the likes of Kon, Kerri Chandler and Master at Work.

Flash’s dub hypnotises with a two note B-line, delayed EFX, sparse production and trippy vocals. Jazzy keys, looped guitars and make it a tracky, heads down shoe shuffler.

Oslo’s De Fantastiske To add their magic to the ingredients and the result is a lush eight minutes of synth chords, arps and 808 drums. It is reminiscent of Nu Groove, Marshall Jefferson and early Paper.

Finally, Norway’s Doc L Junior brings out the soul. Rhodes, synth bass, upfront congas, wonky vocals and its a late night jam that hits the sweet spot.

Alexander Barck (Jazzanova) – I love the Flash

Mark Farina – Dig!

Fingerman – Proper house music. Love it :)

Get Down Edits – This is quality, Flash Dub is so good.

Deep South Audio – Mint beats. Flash had his super hero pants on the day he laid these beats down .. supported straight away on Radio 17/04/2019

Tici Taci Music – Paper is on fire at the moment. No pun intended. The Part 2 Dub is my fave here but it’s all good.benoit C – Coll one

Gratts – Fun take on one of my favourite classics.

Third Attempt – This will definitely get playtime. Some really soulful stuff going on here. Love the overall feeling of the EP, last track is my favourite.

Flash Atkins & Charlie Sinclair – That Hit

Flash Atkins has pulled in Charlie Sinclair, singer from one of Manchester’s hottest new bands, Sylvette for a collaboration that promises to be the start of something special. The track has already been gathering heat, with Bill Brewster calling it ‘one of his favourite house records of 2017’ and reports of it rocking ALFOS and The Warehouse Project.

The original has a throbbing sub over clipped techy drums, muted guitar and an incessant Moog riff. But the killer punch is Charlie Sinclair’s soulful, intimate vocals that sit beautifully over the music. The groove is locked and builds to the break where a hint of disco hits the floor before the final section brings in the bells to devastating effect. The end result is a track that is destined to knock socks off in the coming months. You were warned.

Sean Johnston liked it so much he asked to do a remix and the result is everything you would expect from the Hardway Brothers. He keeps the original elements but toughens things up with added oomph, taking it in a proto house and techno direction.

Finally Tal M. Klein strips the track back to it’s bare basics with devastating effect. Just a kick, the guitar and serious compression provide space for the tripped out vocal and a truly psychedelic deep house experience.

Flash Atkin – The Life and Remixes

2015 saw Flash Atkins release his debut album ‘The Life and Times’ and it’s mix of club smashers and disco nodders found people like FK, Andrew Weatherall, Horse Meat Disco, Ivan Smagghe, Rune Lindbaek and Bill Brewster getting hot under the collar.

Now comes the remix album with a collection of tracks some of which have only been out on vinyl and some not at all. It’s a roll call of who’s doing it right at the moment from the well known to the up and coming but all nail it. Names include The Revenge, The Emperor Machine, Sleazy McQueen, Pete Herbert, Tal M. Klein and Steve Cobby. Plus there’s a healthy representation from Norway in the form of Ralph Myerz, B.G.Baarregaard and Mental Overdrive. From the paper stable Leon Sweet, Doc L. Jnr step up and the elusive Jamie L turns out a 12 minute Detroit (by way of Halifax) monster.

So you’ve played the game, drunk the beer, danced to the tunes, read the fanzine, rolled your eyes at the middle aged man in tights and now you’ve got the remix album. Job done.
