On Monday, 31 August from 22.00 – 23.00, failed superhero and border-line alcoholic Flash Atkins hosted a disco party on the 4th Plinth in Trafalgar Square as part of Anthony Gormley’s One and Other.
He attempted to re-create the atmosphere of Studio 51, the soundtrack of the Paradise Garage, the energy of The Hacienda circa 1988, the sound system of the MOS and the lighting of U2’s stage show by performing live along to his DJ set……off a van leisure battery.
This is the DJ set.

On Monday, 31 August from 22.00 – 23.00, failed superhero and border-line alcoholic Flash Atkins hosted a disco party on the 4th Plinth in Trafalgar Square.
He attempted to re-create the atmosphere of Studio 51, the soundtrack of the Paradise Garage, the energy of The Hacienda circa 1988, the sound system of the MOS and the lighting of U2’s stage show………by performing live and DJ-ing off a van leisure battery. He used his laptop, microkorg, MPC 2000, percussion, bongoes, microphone, loudhailer, gin, power amp and speaker to great effect.
The set consisted of his new single The Sweetshop with Caspa Codina, exclusive tracks forthcoming from himself in collaboration with Kathy Diamond, Karoshi Bros, Danielle Moore (Crazy P) and George Demure (did you hear GIGOLO played at the end of the set? WOW) plus unreleased We Are Woodville and PAPERecordings material as well as the latest bumpers and thumpers.
It is part of Anthony Gormley’s One and Other (www.oneandother.co.uk) – Watch out for a live interview in Trafalgar Square on Friday September 4 with Clive Anderson at 7pm on Sky Arts 1.

Flash Atkins can finally kiss his life goodbye as a superhero plucked from the musicial underbelly of lifes hard knocks, and bask in the delicious glory that this ‘best hero in village’ local rag coverage will bring – Kyrptonite?
Pah ….. he’s even aroused the curiousity of the Queen during his forthcoming Trafalgar Square Fourth Plinth performance.
How’s he gonna get up there you ask – Cherry Picker? nahhhh he’ll fly of course….
After weeks of deliberation, Depeche Mode have finally chosen a winner for their ‘Peace’ remix contest. Over 1000 producers entered the Beatport-sponsored remix contest, and over 51,000 votes were cast by the public making it the biggest remix competition ever held on Beatportal.
Hi name is our very own Håkan Lidbo!
Altogether the band received 20 remixes, 10 chosen by the public via a vote, and 10 chosen by Beatport’s judges (who listened to, and debated each and every remix).
Depeche Mode then listened to and scrutinized each of the 20 remixes, and spent many days deciding which mix would be crowned their eventual winner.
In the end, they found their champion.
Wahoooo!!

Flash Atkins has also done a new DJ mix that is a blend of house, disco,
dubstep, techno, soul, breaks, electronica and balearic. Unbelievable I
know, but he does have the power to manipulate sound.

Here’s a link to a balearicy kind of mix of downbeat, soul, pop, reggae, dub and breaks done just because the sun is shining.
Ideal for BBQs, ironing and biscuit baking.
Flash Atkins – Beats and Pieces DJ Mix No. 1
Flash Atkins is a super hero who had his gravy days in the 80s saving the world with his ability to manipulate sound.
Unfortunately he’s fallen on hard times and can be spotted in the less salubrious parts of London, Manchester and West Yorkshire stoned or drunk on borrowed time & money. To make ends meet he uses his special powers to DJ, remix and make tracks for We Are Woodville and PAPERecordings.
The Sweetshop is his new single and is a concise slice of low-fi electronic pop sitting in the hinterland somewhere between Hot Chip and Calvin Harris. Gabriel Olegavich’s alterego, Caspa Codina takes time out from producing Spektrum, Lady Sovereign and Envy to provide vocals.
On the remix front, Håkan Lidbo goes mainfloor with a glitchy 4/4 bass driven thumper, Radioproof veer off in to Hoxton Pop territory and new kids Dieter & the Gadabouts take it deep, big and bouncy. Flash Atkins also has a crack with his Into The Valley version that takes different types of house, sticks them through the mixer and emerges with a whole load of disco attitude and something that The Juan Maclean would be proud of.
