Flash Atkins – Campervan EP

1 Test One
2 Cherry Bounce
3 Test One (Flash Dub)
4 Cherry Bounce (Flash Dub)

Flash Atkins is a former Super Hero who lives in a Campervan in a field in deepest Yorkshire, maintaining an unhealthy addiction to drugs and booze.

Flash is actually the alter ego of Paper / The Bionics’ Ben Davis and he was created as a reaction against perma-tanned-indoors-sunglass-wearing-wanna-be-superstar DJs.

The Campervan EP is four tracks of floor rocking house music. First up, Test One has taken the original bleep classic as a starting point and given it a disco makeover. Starting off deep and percussive, it breaks to live bass and horns with plenty of analogue synths providing the electronics. Once the acid house piano comes in at the end, it’s dancefloor game over!

Cherry Bounce uses a cheeky sample to hold down a straight up take of garage house. With a bass line that nods to Farley & Heller and funked out Rhodes, it builds to a synth heavy drop before heading back in to the grooved keys.

The Test One dub strips things back to a simple nagging synth line for a big room take that has got Tribal Records running through it’s DNA. Big reverbs and heavy bass means this is simple and very effective.

Finally, the Cherry Bounce Dub goes tracky and hypnotic, riding out the original’s elements with the Rhodes getting filtered to change things up.

More quality from Flash Atkins, the man with no plan.

PAPD 23 – Sleazy McQueen – Reconnect E.P. by Paper Recordings

PAPD23
Sleazy McQueen – Reconnect EP
1 We Need To Reconnect feat. Anne Montone
2 Rollin’ Me By
3 Under My Spell

Florida resident Sleazy McQueen has been making his own brand of disco for labels like Bearfunk, Hairy Claw and Whiskey Disco. With clean off-kilter production and clever samples, it’s unmistakable, fresh and funk-fuelled. Now he’s done his first EP for Paper and it’s a bobby belter!

First up, We Need To Reconnect takes 1991 and drops it firmly in 2011. It’s got Strictly Rhythm sounding bass, NYC garage piano, analogue synth lines (featuring Gazeebo Intl), disco drums and a hefty bottom end. Add Anne Montone’s vocal and it’s a floor filler that sounds like it’s from the golden age of house.

Next up is the slow burning deep hypnotic disco of Rollin’ Me By, that has hints of Tom Tom Club and Metro Area. Heavily chorused synths, nagging bass and muted guitar makes it deep and immersive plus a clever arrangement provides great dynamics.

Finally, Under My Spell takes it down a notch with a spooky keys and a vocal sample wrapped around a tuned out bass. The whole is a super deep house / disco hybrid.

He’s on tour in Europe for the whole of November so go and tip him a wink

Managed by Frank Lihaug, this place always seems to have great music, great people and a friendly atmosphere. People get down to all sorts of disco madness that starts off easy and ends up crazy.

Really nice backyard boogie where the music varies but its usually a great experience. Last I checked it out, Toomy Disco was playing some dope tunes.

The Bionics – Love Chains (The Remixes)

1 Love Chains (Mic Newman Mix)
2 Love Chains (Max Essa Mix)
3 Love Chains (Neil Diablo Mix)
4 Love Chains (Original)

Released 26th September – Download

The Bionics is a studio project consisting of Paper honcho Ben Davis (Flash Atkins) with Crazy P’s Danielle Moore and Tim Davies. They released the Solid Silver album on Bocajito Records in 2007 to great acclaim for it’s meshing of styles like house, disco, funk, rock and soul.

The lead track was Love Chains which is a slow burning deep houser that starts with a nagging one note bass and Danielle’s plaintive vocals before heading on to disco territory. It got spins in clubs worldwide and made fans of DJs like The Unabombers, PBR Streetgang and Greg Wilson.

Love Chains comes with a remix package that covers all bases. First off is the hotly tipped Melbourne based Mic Newman (Fantasticman) who has been flagged up by Juno and Resident Advisor as one to watch for 2011. Mic’s take demonstrates why his star is in the ascendant with a deep house bubbler built around a Rhodes riff that funks and turns, pitched down vocals and rock solid drum programming. It’s a mix that will do the business early doors, peak time or late night.

Max Essa returns to the Paper fold after making his first appearance on the label in 1997. He demonstrates why he’s at the forefront of the nu-disco movement with a remix that begins with an NRG bassline and percussion then takes the parts and weaves them together to create some quality space disco.

Finally, Manchester’s unsung DJ hero Neil Diablo has used the full vocal and kept it disco with off kilter drums, pads and an analogue bass that is pure 80s disco put through El Diablo’s dancefloor.

JAMIE L – SOMETHING BETTER

1 Something Better (Original)
2 Something Better (Dub)
3 Something Better (Flash Atkins Mix)
4 Something Better (Ny*ak)

OUT NOW IN THE SHOP

Jamie Logun has been cutting his teeth in some of the best clubs the North has to offer including the Electric Chair, Southport Weekender and Cutloose listening to DJs like Moodyman, Brennan Green and Theo Parrish.

Those influences have been consolidated into his debut release for Paper Recordings. He has taken a sample and built Something Better into a hypnotic slice of deep soulful disco. It ebbs, flows and builds to the break where it drops before going heads down again. Slo-mo disco indeed!

The dub fills things out with the same elements but more driving distorted drums and Rhodes. An analogue bass is introduced after the break that takes the last section in to subby waters.

Flash Atkins goes in a more minimal tech-house direction but upping the BPMs slightly. With a swinging sub and morphing lead, the mix filters in and out. The keys are introduced and build to strings and arpeggiatored pads before finally heading back down in to 5am deep house territory

Finally Ny*ak uses the sample to go more leftfield with a broken house groove to produce a hypnotic remix with soul bursting out at the seams.

Mr Scruff – The original version of the jamie l is great, lovely heads down late night slo-mo goodness, tons of plays from me!
