Flash Atkins – Campervan EP

1 Test One
2 Cherry Bounce
3 Test One (Flash Dub)
4 Cherry Bounce (Flash Dub)

Flash Atkins is a former Super Hero who lives in a Campervan in a field in deepest Yorkshire, maintaining an unhealthy addiction to drugs and booze.

Flash is actually the alter ego of Paper / The Bionics’ Ben Davis and he was created as a reaction against perma-tanned-indoors-sunglass-wearing-wanna-be-superstar DJs.

The Campervan EP is four tracks of floor rocking house music. First up, Test One has taken the original bleep classic as a starting point and given it a disco makeover. Starting off deep and percussive, it breaks to live bass and horns with plenty of analogue synths providing the electronics. Once the acid house piano comes in at the end, it’s dancefloor game over!

Cherry Bounce uses a cheeky sample to hold down a straight up take of garage house. With a bass line that nods to Farley & Heller and funked out Rhodes, it builds to a synth heavy drop before heading back in to the grooved keys.

The Test One dub strips things back to a simple nagging synth line for a big room take that has got Tribal Records running through it’s DNA. Big reverbs and heavy bass means this is simple and very effective.

Finally, the Cherry Bounce Dub goes tracky and hypnotic, riding out the original’s elements with the Rhodes getting filtered to change things up.

More quality from Flash Atkins, the man with no plan.

PAPD 23 – Sleazy McQueen – Reconnect E.P. by Paper Recordings

PAPD23
Sleazy McQueen – Reconnect EP
1 We Need To Reconnect feat. Anne Montone
2 Rollin’ Me By
3 Under My Spell

Florida resident Sleazy McQueen has been making his own brand of disco for labels like Bearfunk, Hairy Claw and Whiskey Disco. With clean off-kilter production and clever samples, it’s unmistakable, fresh and funk-fuelled. Now he’s done his first EP for Paper and it’s a bobby belter!

First up, We Need To Reconnect takes 1991 and drops it firmly in 2011. It’s got Strictly Rhythm sounding bass, NYC garage piano, analogue synth lines (featuring Gazeebo Intl), disco drums and a hefty bottom end. Add Anne Montone’s vocal and it’s a floor filler that sounds like it’s from the golden age of house.

Next up is the slow burning deep hypnotic disco of Rollin’ Me By, that has hints of Tom Tom Club and Metro Area. Heavily chorused synths, nagging bass and muted guitar makes it deep and immersive plus a clever arrangement provides great dynamics.

Finally, Under My Spell takes it down a notch with a spooky keys and a vocal sample wrapped around a tuned out bass. The whole is a super deep house / disco hybrid.

He’s on tour in Europe for the whole of November so go and tip him a wink

PROVIANT AUDIO – SLUTTEN PA ALT

Proviant Audio – Slutten På Alt by Paper Recordings

‘Slutten På Alt’ is one of the highlights from Proviant Audio’s debut album ‘Real Loves Tastes Like This!’ and now gets the remix treatment.

The album is a rich mix of disco, funk, soul and house which has seen the 18 year old Norwegian receive broad critical acclaim as part of the new generation of Scandavian artists.

The release kicks off with the original (promo only) which is a journey through disco and ending up on a killer riff that sounds like it’s been stolen from a lost classic (it hasn’t, it’s all played live).

Ralph Myerz ‘Norwegian Kiss’ turns in a broken slice of soulful tech-disco. His mix moves from a soul groove to a brilliant slow-mo breakdown before lifting back into a tight house groove.

Next up, Leftside Wobble is at the controls and an artist probably best known for his superb re-edits in recent times. For his version of ‘Slutten På Alt’ he picks up the funk and runs with it, creating a dubby disco mix with plenty of bounce and leftfield soul.

Finally Paper Recordings own Flash Atkins takes things in a deeper direction fusing the best of house, techno and disco in to a late night, bottom heavy floor filler.

Roberto Rodriguez : Absolutely loving the Ralph Myerz and Leftside Wobble mixes! Will get lots of spins!

Jim Baron (Crazy P / Ron Basejam) : Good selection of mixes, like ’em all but think Flash Atkins just shades it.

Disco Outcasts (Manchester) : Jesus Christ!! The Flash Atkins Mix is a super bass heavy workout that will detonate massively! Also feeling Leftside Wobbles acid disco affair.

Benoit C : Cooooool EP

Neil Diablos : Realy like the Ralph Myers quirky remix but its the Flash Atkins mix doing it for me!

Yanick Labbé : Flash Atkins all the way!

Pete Herbert : Ralph Myerz! What a great remix… loved the RM stuff from years back.

James Teej : Great package, the Ralph Myerz is crazy, love the acid in the Leftside Wobble mix and Flash Atkins once again does it. Very dope.
