Pablo & Shoey – Puttin’ Some Stank On It

After wowing us on Trash The Wax #1 with their edit “Raw Human Emotion” Pablo & Shoey, those boys from the emerald isle are back with a 3 track EP of the good stuff.

Kicking things off is the glitter ball encrusted “Funk It” that goes straight for the disco jugular. It’s got all the essential Studio 54 ingredients such as infectious handclaps, wah wah guitar, hooky piano loops, catchy vocals plus a spaced out breakdown where you can get lost in the smoke.

Down To The Bone exits the discotheque and heads into the early 80s Bronx streets. Grab the lino, strap on your hi-tops and prepare to bust a few windmills with this slice of edited hip hop/electro funkyness with its very large bassline and everything but the 808 kitchen sink. Check yourself before you wreck yourself….

Big Base finishes things off by being an almost hybrid of the previous two cuts…disco tinged percussion with a wacka wacka guitar lick throughout, body popping breakbeat and old school stabs to ensure one foot is stuck firmly in the street with the other spinning on the floor.

Perfect summer drenched offerings all to liven things up a bit!

Ease (Nightmares on Wax) – Fave track is Big bass.. will support

Rune Lindbaek – Perfic for me sets!

Luke Howard (Horsemeat Disco) – Good stuff. Funk It slowed down works for me.

Sleazy McQueen – Funk It is RIGHT! Love these Sylvester vibes!

Hot Toddy – Funk It is my pick, and will work well over t’summer

Phat Phil Cooper – Yes defo got the flava… will play on the beach :o)

Billy Scurry – The Disco Pikeys are at it again infecting people with their stankin groove.. everyone here is a winner for me!! Viva la disco choo choo!!

This Is Why We Dance – V. authentic-sounding retro vibes

Tunnel FM – Great EP, all tracks are great about them.. will try out for sure, Thanks!

Stuart Knight (Toolroom) – Down To The Bone for me once a B-Boy always a B-Boyyyy

2 Billion Beats – Spot the Davy DMX sample! What a bleeding ace EP, loving the 80s electro vibes.

Bogdan Taran – Funk It is lovely piece of disco!

Deep South Audio – Upbeat sounds …. Disco fantastic .. defo not plastic and gonna make the girlies spin … Another summer winner from Paper

Research – Miss Ya

Paper Disco continues its march onwards with an EP from Research. The band were recently heard on Trash The Wax and Day By Day on Paper Recordings last year had Psychemagik sprinkling their remix fairy dust.

Miss Ya takes things back to the 80s with big drums, off kilter bass and a straight ahead groove. Add moody vocals, lush pads for the chorus, a scattering of distorted guitars, Rhodes plus super good production and its a heavy track for DJs who know what’s what.

The Go-Go Time Mix takes things moodier for a more stripped back dubbier version but keeps all the rhythm in place. The vocal is used sparingly with the Rhodes, guitar, piano and congas all taking their turn to keep the track moving along as it jams out to the end touching on classic tracks as it goes.

It’s a refreshing take on disco that isn’t using the good times of the Paradise Garage as its inspiration but reaches for darker and more interesting corners.

Ron Basejam (Crazy P) – Well wonk-funk. Nice one!

Tim Love Lee – Really feeling this.

Get Down Edits – Feeling this guys!

Cosmic Disco – Nice chuggy discoid vibes! Early doors slap bass tackle. Thanks!

Bobby Beige – Really liking this, very sleazy dirty slice of /disco/funk with some neat guitars and piano lines. Will be giving this a whirl out in Amsterdam this weekend.

DJ Rocca – Go Go Time Mix for me.

Feodor AllRight – Go-Go Time mix is a cracker!

Billy Scurry – Sterling dancefloor vibes, really digging!

Neil Scott (El Diablo Social Club) – NIce traxxxx.

Joe Morris (Clandestino) – These are dope!

Dr Rob – It`s the rolling pianos on the “Go-Go Time” mix that work for me.

Advokkat – Cool track.

This Is Why We Dance – Go-Go Time mix for me here.

Deep South Audio – Both tunes show that the band have a swag in there sound . For me ill be sliding the remix late in to the DJ set when the lights are dark and the vibe is deep.

Ste Hodge – Moody & sassy in equal measures – Brilliant stuff!

Frank Lihaug -Nice and funky!

Black Mighty Wax – These grooves have infected my mind!

Ed Mahon (Cowbell Radio) – The original is instantly one of my favourite tunes of the year! Pure sleaze, and definitely the kind of track you could build a whole set around! The Go-Go mix is also strong, that piano came out of nowhere and nearly floored me! Definitely getting hammered all Summer!

Mutant Disco Radio Show – Go-Go Time mix for me.

Research Juno Review

Research - Miss Ya - Juno

Paper Recordings continue to explore their own, unique interpretation of disco in fine style with this newie from Research. “Miss Ya’ Is an odd foray into Balearica, when Balearic meant a little bit of everything thrown into the mix. Echoing the eccentric nature of Trevor Horn’s best productions, the original mix fuses a slo-mo body music groove with bluesy guitar, laid back drums and blissed out synth washes. Meanwhile on the digital flipside, the GoGo Time mix strips everything back to a sleazy punk funk crawler.

Trash The Wax Vol. 1

Paper’s output has often lurked on the fringes of disco and now seemed as good a time as any to jump in with both feet, goggles and snorkel.

“Trash The Wax Vol. 1” hits the digital racks on April 3 featuring 16 original low slung, wigged out and floor heavy cuts from the great, the good, the tapped and the untapped.

Released on Paper Disco (a sub label of Paper Recordings) it follows hot on the heels of the 80s sugar rush that was Proviant Audio’s “Drift Days & Disco Nights” which found its way in to the boxes of Tensnake, Soul Clap, Horsemeat Disco and Danny Krivit as well as garnering a Norwegian Emmy nomination for the best album of 2013.

Artists on Volume 1 range from young 80s bucks like 2 Billion Beats who are pretenders to Crazy P’s crown, Manchester’s City Life DJ of the 2013 and Wet Play resident Ste Spandex, Paper’s ginger underground house assassin Richard Seaborne and Italian duo Gran Turismo.

More seasoned support comes from veterans like bootleg king Keep Schtum, Brighton’s builder of heavy grooves Fingerman, Australia’s disco vigilante Late Nite Tuff Guy and Manchester’s best kept secret Daco. And that’s just the ones we mentioned!

Running from sleazy late night jams to 80s synth and NRG to classic cut-ups, if this album didn’t make you want to go out and jump off a podium it’s time to get your hearing checked!
