Hailing from Barquisimeto, Venezuela, Vainc makes his debut on Paper with two cuts from the deeper side of house.
2000300 has washes of synths set over a nagging guitar and percussion. With snatches of trumpet and vocals, it adds to a dubby tripped out house track reminiscent of Floppy Sounds and FK’s 90s productions.
‘It Smells Like Jungle’ hits a similar vein with tribal congas, tripped out FX, vocals and jungle noises. Seriously deep music for late nights and early mornings.
Project Sound is the follow up to last year’s Project Fear compilation and keeps it global with the freshest house music originating from South Africa to Norway and the USA to dear old Blighty.
There are new artists to the label like Tumisang Pooe, Mark Zowie, Erik Skantze, A Band Called Oh and Mr Tea as well as more familiar names like Flash Atkins, Fingerman, Daco, Jonny Miller, Mental Overdrive, Ryan Kick, Leca, 2 Billion Beats, Kimo and Rave-enka as part of Nattmat. Tracks cover the deeper side of house but all pack punch and sealed with the Paper stamp of approval.

It’s time for the Sunday Paper compilation, featuring some of the more horizontal and forgotten corners of the catalogue. There are two exclusives with Bergen’s Keyboy making a return to the label and the wondrous GladLaks i Galaxen plus Leftside Wobbles’s unreleased space dub of Leon Sweet’s Sunny Bigler. Add in artists new and old like Jamie L, Crazy P, Maxx Mortimer, Steve Cobby, Flash Atkins, De Fantastiske To, Kahuun plus many more and it’s sunshine all the way.
So crack a tinny / roll a fat one / stick the kettle on / crank the BBQ and dive in.
Oh boy, that came around quick! One day we’re faxing giant penises to magazines and the next we’ve got kids and are on our 200th single release. It’s been 22 years since things kicked off with Salt City Orchestra’s The Book and in the intervening years we’ve hopefully carved out our little corner in the pantheon of house music. We’ve lived by our first “hidden” message on PAP001 “Look Forward Not Back” by keeping on keeping on but this is a chance to buy ourselves a pint.
PAP200 is three tracks from friends new and old that originally came out on a limited edition 12” Record Store Day release. Crazy P(enis) return to the fold for the first time since 2003 and it’s good to have them back. Last Knockers has their trademark stripped back electronic funk with Danielle Moore adding the disco fizz. There’s plenty of wonk and roll as it builds over 10 glorious minutes.
When Steve Cobby was asked what Paper meant to him he said “northern musical heritage” and we’ll take that. He has been knocking it out the park since the early 90s and this is his debut release for the label. Boule De Suif is a trip through funk and soul that is timeless but of it’s time; it’s what Herbie would sound like if he had grown up in Hull.
Finally Flash Atkins goes down a more conventional route with his trademark layered sound. What starts as a straight forward deep house track evolves with trippy vocals and a chorus that brings the hairs up on the back of your neck. Mixmag liked it so much they gave it their Disco Single of the Month.

After providing big hitters on Trash The Wax 2 & 3 as well as a damn fine debut EP, Kooky & Damoon return to the Paper fold with Niki Kand on vocals to deliver three disco licked nuggets.
There She Flies is all about the low end baby; it’s got warm & wobbly bass with a few peaks & squeaks teamed up with some Nile style guitar and classic piano stabs. Use this one to set your stall out.
We Go Dancing channels some inner Shaft riffs & Stevie style chords with a bassline that hooks you in straight away. Adding the fantastic vocal makes the whole thing destined to be played on a yacht party under the Croatian moon.
Closing things off Take Me High still has bags of groove but takes the party late night. Laser toms, strings, badass bass plus a few surprises make this one sound like the cousin of a Paradise Garage escapee.
The man known to his Mum as Dave is back with another space themed EP and yet again it’s four tracks of immaculately produced tech-soul bombs. We are particularly chuffed to have Basil Clarke from legendary Manchester band Yargo delivering vocals on A Little More Volume which is a thumping guitar driven wallop of a tune that hits all the rave buttons without getting boxed in by any of them.
The live mix makes some subtle changes with drums that have a bit more groove, added synths and tweaked production but the result is the same : dancefloor devastation.
Skirting is tech-houser that wears a big acid house grin. Anchored round an acid B-line it burbles and squeaks it’s way over drums and congas that swing like Baloo going toe to toe with King Louie plus added tropicala. It will bring the sunshine to the dingiest clubs and the darkest of basements to outdoor festivals.
Finally Daco does his psychedelic prog disco thing on Saving Grace. Loose broken drums, octave jumping arps and some seriously deranged programming make this a trip to dealt with carefully but the rewards will be cosmic!

It’s been a while since the last Paper Cuts so we’ve got a stockpile of bonafide, road tested bombs that hit every every button labeled ‘rave’. From subterranean acid to disco bangers, it’s a collection that stretches two and half years at the coal face of house.
From Norway we have Ralph Myerz‘s epic fourteen minute ‘Acid 4 Eddie’, Tromsø legend Doc L Jnr’s wonky ‘Twilight’, Diskobeistet’s nu-disco ‘Birkelunden’ and ‘Gammal Morro’ plus young guns Rave-Enka and De Fantastiske To. Closer to home the Flash Atkins Gilles Peterson endorsed ‘Drug Empire’ and Andrew Weatherall favourite ‘Acid House Creator’ make an appearance, Daco brings his nu tech-soul and 2 Billion Beats do their thing. Kit Tacchini goes deep, Kimo shows his colours as one to watch, Weedyman drives it home and Chris Massey’s mix of Richard Seaborne still does damage.
We’ve also got exclusives from Neil Quigley and Mezman who take things deep and dance floor plus Leon Sweet’s Zed that walks the line between disco, techno, house and old school beautifully.
Overall it’s a damn fine snapshot of where the label has been and where it’s going with music that no discerning DJ should be without.

2015 saw Flash Atkins release his debut album ‘The Life and Times’ and it’s mix of club smashers and disco nodders found people like FK, Andrew Weatherall, Horse Meat Disco, Ivan Smagghe, Rune Lindbaek and Bill Brewster getting hot under the collar.
Now comes the remix album with a collection of tracks some of which have only been out on vinyl and some not at all. It’s a roll call of who’s doing it right at the moment from the well known to the up and coming but all nail it. Names include The Revenge, The Emperor Machine, Sleazy McQueen, Pete Herbert, Tal M. Klein and Steve Cobby. Plus there’s a healthy representation from Norway in the form of Ralph Myerz, B.G.Baarregaard and Mental Overdrive. From the paper stable Leon Sweet, Doc L. Jnr step up and the elusive Jamie L turns out a 12 minute Detroit (by way of Halifax) monster.
So you’ve played the game, drunk the beer, danced to the tunes, read the fanzine, rolled your eyes at the middle aged man in tights and now you’ve got the remix album. Job done.

Diskobeistet’s Birkelunden EP touched on the classic paper sound with added Norwegian vocals and was a hot one for us last year. So hot in fact that now we’ve stuck it through the remix machine just in time for summer.
Vinny Villbass takes it across the ocean and gives it a stripped back NYC spin. The result is a no messing, late night jacked up workout with added hypnotising synth shots and rolling drums & percussion but still retaining the original hooky chords.
Richard Seaborne never fails and this time he channels the spirit of Todd Terry by way of Leeds. Machine gun snares, filtered bass and keys aim straight between the eyes and score a bullseye for dance floor dynamite.
Haugli takes the groove deep but his mix ramps up deceptively with a three note synth rolling bassline that steams along like a lost take on a Johnny Cash session. Chords & pads from the original swirl in & out to up the cosmic ante for a very playable slice of modern dance music.
Boxing things off is new track Dypet that rolls a phatty and thumbs a lift to the after party. Lazy, hazy almost broken beats with some serious enticing synth sounds and basslines make this a definite addition to any discerning post club mixtape.
